Beyond the Rule: Preparing for the Operational Reality of BVLOS

August 3, 2026 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

What will operators actually need to do differently under Part 108?

The FAA’s proposed Part 108 rule has generated significant excitement across the commercial drone industry. By creating a standardized regulatory framework for many beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations, the proposal could reduce reliance on today’s case-by-case waiver process and make routine BVLOS flights more practical for a wider range of operators.

As drone operations experts AirData explain in its recent blog post, FAA Part 108 Explained: Everything Drone Operators Need to Know in 2026, the proposal represents more than a regulatory milestone. It also marks a shift in how organizations prepare for and manage daily drone operations.

While Part 108 would simplify the path to many BVLOS operations, it does not eliminate the responsibilities that come with flying beyond visual line of sight. Instead, it establishes a standardized framework that places greater emphasis on consistent operational compliance and documentation.

Documentation Becomes Part of Everyday Operations

One of AirData’s key observations is that “the biggest day-to-day change is documentation.”

That may not be as attention-grabbing as expanded BVLOS authority, but it could have an equally significant impact on professional drone programs.

Under the proposed framework, operators will still need to maintain the records, procedures, and operational oversight required to support compliant BVLOS operations. AirData highlights examples such as maintenance history, pilot currency, operational safety documentation, and risk management procedures as areas that organizations should be prepared to manage as part of their routine operations.

For organizations accustomed to applying for individual waivers, that represents a different approach. Rather than assembling documentation primarily to support a waiver request, operators should expect compliance activities to become an ongoing part of managing a professional drone program.

Preparing to Scale

As BVLOS operations become more accessible, many organizations are likely to expand the number of aircraft, pilots, locations, and missions they manage.

That growth creates its own operational challenge. Records that may have been manageable for a small fleet can become much harder to maintain consistently as operations scale. Flight logs, maintenance records, pilot qualifications, and operational documentation all need to remain organized, current, and readily available.

According to AirData, preparing for Part 108 is not simply about understanding the new rule. It is also about ensuring that the operational systems supporting a drone program can keep pace with more routine BVLOS operations.

“From the beginning, AirData has focused on helping organizations manage the complexity of professional drone operations,” said Eran Steiner, Founder & CEO of AirData. “BVLOS represents the next major step for the industry, but it also raises the bar for operational compliance. Our customers are realizing that the tracking, documentation, and oversight they’ll need for BVLOS are already integrated into the system they use every day.”

Looking Ahead

The proposed Part 108 rule represents one of the most significant changes to commercial drone regulation in years. By replacing much of today’s waiver-based process with a standardized framework, it has the potential to make BVLOS operations more predictable and more scalable.

At the same time, the proposal makes clear that successful BVLOS programs will depend on more than regulatory approval alone. Organizations will need the operational processes, documentation, and oversight to support compliant operations every day.

For drone operators preparing for the transition, understanding the rule is only the first step. Building the workflows needed to operate within it may prove just as important.
