Hydrogen-Powered Heven AeroTech Z1 Joins DIU Blue UAS Select List

November 20, 2025 by Miriam McNabb 1 Comment

U.S.-built platform earns top Blue UAS designation for secure, mission-ready operations

Hydrogen-Powered Z1 Earns Blue UAS Select Status

Heven AeroTech has announced that its Z1 hydrogen-powered unmanned aircraft system has been added to the Defense Innovation Unit’s (DIU) Blue UAS Cleared List with the highest available designation: Blue UAS Select.

According to the company, this status is reserved for platforms that meet NDAA supply-chain requirements, pass the Department of Defense’s most stringent cybersecurity evaluations, and are formally identified by the DoD as filling a validated operational capability gap.

The Blue UAS initiative was created by DIU to provide a vetted roster of drones and components that meet strict standards for cybersecurity, supply-chain integrity, and operational performance, giving federal users a faster path to trusted systems.

Authority to Operate for DoD and Federal Partners

With the Blue UAS Select designation, the Z1 has been granted an Authority to Operate (ATO). That confirms the aircraft as a secure, mission-ready platform approved for immediate use across Department of Defense components and federal mission partners.

The designation places the Z1 among a small group of aircraft recognized as secure, mission-ready, and important for strengthening U.S. operational readiness.

“The Z1 becoming a Blue UAS Select platform is a major milestone for Heven AeroTech,” said Bentzion Levinson, CEO and Founder of Heven AeroTech. “This designation confirms that our hydrogen-powered technology meets the highest standards for security, endurance, and mission adaptability, and that it’s ready to support operators wherever they need it.”

The approval was granted through Zepher Flight Labs, Heven AeroTech’s wholly owned subsidiary.

Supporting Domestic Production and Policy Goals

The announcement comes as senior defense officials and members of Congress continue to call for greater domestic drone manufacturing capacity and reduced reliance on foreign-made systems. Those calls have helped drive demand for U.S.-built, NDAA-compliant platforms that can be fielded quickly across defense and federal agencies.

Heven AeroTech’s Blue UAS Select milestone follows the company’s recent expansion with a new headquarters facility in Sterling, Virginia. The facility represents a strategic investment to scale domestic production and speed delivery of advanced unmanned systems to defense and public safety customers across the United States.

By achieving Select status, the Z1 demonstrates its readiness to support critical missions across defense, public safety, infrastructure security, and disaster response, while also backing U.S.-based manufacturing and autonomy innovation.

What the Blue UAS Program Delivers

Developed by DIU, the Blue UAS program provides federal users with a trusted list of unmanned systems that satisfy DoD cybersecurity, supply-chain, and operational standards. The program was established in response to national security concerns about foreign-manufactured drones and offers a streamlined way for agencies to procure secure, NDAA-compliant platforms without lengthy case-by-case reviews. Within the program, Blue UAS Select is the highest designation for complete platforms. It signals that a system has cleared both technical and security hurdles and helps reduce procurement risk for agencies that need to field capability quickly.

For defense and public safety operators, that can shorten the gap between emerging mission requirements and the deployment of vetted systems in the field.

About Heven AeroTech and the Z1

Founded in 2019, Heven AeroTech focuses on hydrogen-powered, runway-independent drones engineered for mission-critical operations. According to the company, Heven AeroTech is the market leader in hydrogen-powered, runway-independent drones engineered for mission-critical operations.

Headquartered in Virginia, Heven AeroTech designs, manufactures, and deploys unmanned systems that combine endurance, stealth, and modularity for defense, commercial, and humanitarian use. With facilities in Washington state and Virginia, Heven AeroTech’s platforms are designed and built in the U.S., with operational deployments around the globe.

With the Z1 now on the Blue UAS Cleared List as a Blue UAS Select platform, Heven AeroTech adds a hydrogen-powered option to the roster of approved systems available to U.S. defense and federal users seeking secure, long-endurance unmanned aircraft.

Hydrogen can provide not only fuel to power military drones (for long flights with minimal signature), but also can provide the buoyancy so the drones can stay afloat longer and travel even further. Indeed, with its hefty hydrogen load, the drone itself becomes a flying bomb that can silently crash into enemy assets — be they on air, at sea, or on land. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has unwittingly cut off nearly all research on hydrogen fuel cells and is spending next to nothing on the hydrogen drone warfare which is the future.
