When earthquakes, typhoons, and tsunamis strike, Drone Adventures helps with recovery in a way most aid organizations can’t. The Switzerland-based non-profit deploys 1.5-pound senseFly eBee drones in places like Haiti, the Philippines, and Japan to map areas ravaged by natural disasters.
Traveling up to 12 square kilometers in a single trip, the eBee drones carry a 16-megapixel camera that takes aerial photos and videos of badly damaged areas. Drone Adventures then partners with Pix4D, a Swiss company that develops advanced aerial-imaging software, to create life-saving maps that give local governments and relief organizations valuable information in search-and-rescue and rebuilding efforts. Adam Klaptocz and Emanuele Lubrano, who founded Drone Adventures in 2013, say their mission is to show that drones can be used for the greater public good.
“We believe that to prove technology is effective,” says Lubrano, “the impact on people’s lives must be evident.”
