Wingtra Unveils WingtraRAY: A New Drone to Transform Aerial Surveying

July 10, 2025 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

The new platform offers faster workflows, safer urban operations, and broad payload flexibility for surveyors worldwide.

Wingtra’s new drone, WingtraRAY, designed to push the limits of aerial surveying and mapping.

The WingtraRAY is built specifically for surveyors and promises to remove many of the operational barriers they face today. One major highlight is its ability to operate over people without a waiver, thanks to its parachute add-on. This feature is approved under category 3 operations over people (OOP) across 98% of U.S. territory and supports C6 certification in Europe, qualifying the drone for EASA STS-02.

“First, it’s more cost effective because you have one workflow that lets you cover a lot of acres at a low cost and eliminates site revisits,” said Julian Surber, Senior Product Manager at Wingtra. “Next, it brings a new level of peace of mind to aerial surveying with the parachute, the obstacle avoidance and other safety features. Third, it empowers customers to take on almost any kind of project with one platform, as it supports six high-quality, survey-optimized payloads.”

Faster Workflows and Broad Coverage

WingtraRAY is designed to simplify and accelerate the survey process. Surveyors can set up a site in minutes, fly 100 hectares (250 acres) in ten minutes, and deliver processed data before lunch. The system also offers an adaptive speed feature that improves efficiency and accuracy.

Compared to multirotor drones, WingtraRAY can complete surveys up to ten times faster, depending on the application. Ground control and flight data sync automatically in WingtraCLOUD, allowing for smooth processing in a pre-selected coordinate system.

The system supports six payloads, including new options for high-precision tasks like LIDAR-based digital terrain models and millimeter-resolution airport crack detection. Using the new INSPECT payload, WingtraRAY can map 100 acres at 2.5 mm resolution from 60 meters (200 feet) above ground in about an hour.

A Single Platform for Many Jobs

WingtraRAY is designed to handle a variety of jobs with a single platform. It supports frequent data collection for applications such as cut and fill analysis, large-scale cadastral mapping, and airport inspections.

For example, a small airport can be covered in a single mission without needing to shut down runways repeatedly. This efficiency is enhanced by the system’s inclusion on the AUVSI Green and DIU Blue Cleared lists, which fast-track approval for U.S. government and sensitive infrastructure projects.

Maximilian Boosfeld, CEO at Wingtra, said, “We can talk all day about the impressive new features of WingtraRAY. Yet we’ve learned that our survey customers care about results that solve their problems and fast return on their investment. They also need a solution that’s easy and safe for all of their pilots. With WingtraRAY, we offer these things in one cost-effective system that provides efficient analytics and GIS service deliverables. We’re happy to promote the scaling of aerial insights as more and more surveyors work confidently with a system that empowers them to do more in less time.”

Safety, Simplicity, and Quick ROI

WingtraRAY is designed to reduce risks and improve confidence during operations. The parachute add-on ensures safe flights over populated areas and roads, while obstacle avoidance and a backup battery system add extra layers of security.

By guiding surveyors through each step and reducing manual errors, the system helps avoid costly site revisits. Wingtra emphasizes that many companies will see a return on investment within months thanks to the time saved and increased operational efficiency.

WingtraRAY will be available in select countries starting July 10, 2025, with a global rollout planned for October 2025.
