Ascent’s SPIRIT™ Gains Dual Blue UAS Clearance, Highlighting U.S. Drone Innovation

September 2, 2025 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

SPIRIT now cleared as both a full system and modular component under DIU’s Blue UAS programs

Ascent AeroSystems, based in Massachusetts, has reached a significant milestone. Its Spirit coaxial UAV platform has been recognized by the Defense Innovation Unit in two categories. Spirit is now included in both the Blue UAS Cleared List of complete systems and the Blue UAS Framework of approved components. It is the only airframe recognized in both programs, underscoring its flexibility and reliability.

Building on Open Architecture

The dual recognition reflects the Department of Defense’s emphasis on modular and open systems. Spirit was designed with this approach from the start. Its compact coaxial shape, modular click-ring payload interface, and rugged aircraft-grade build give operators a platform that can grow with evolving mission requirements.

Peter Fuchs, Cofounder and CEO of Ascent AeroSystems, explained the significance.
“The Spirit is now the only UAV approved by DIU as both a complete system and as a component. This distinction demonstrates not only the reliability of the aircraft as delivered, but also how its architecture reflects the Department of Defense’s emphasis on modular, open systems that can evolve with mission requirements.”

Why It Matters

Spirit’s dual recognition offers several advantages:
• Aligned with Department of Defense priorities, Spirit supports scalable and interoperable systems that adapt to mission needs.
• Acquisition is streamlined, as agencies can purchase Spirit directly under Blue UAS guidelines.
• As a cleared component, Spirit provides mission integrators flexibility to design compliant, custom UAV solutions without redundant vetting.
• The coaxial form factor and modular design help operators prepare for changing mission profiles and regulations.

Fuchs added, “This could be the most significant change to the Blue program yet. As Congress advances the national strategy for Drone Dominance, operators need platforms that are not only innovative, but also proven, compliant, and ready for scale. Ascent is delivering those capabilities today and ensuring our customers are positioned to lead the next chapter of U.S. drone adoption.”

Blue UAS Programs

The Blue UAS initiative provides a pathway for trusted drone adoption. The Blue UAS Cleared List covers complete, NDAA-compliant systems that are ready for federal use. The Blue UAS Framework identifies individual components and software modules that have been vetted for cybersecurity and compliance.

Together, the programs support both rapid deployment and flexible design. Complete systems on the Cleared List can be purchased immediately, while Framework components allow integrators to build tailored solutions. Spirit’s place in both programs highlights its role as a versatile platform that can function as an off-the-shelf solution or as the foundation for custom builds.

U.S. Policy Context

Spirit’s recognition also reflects broader government efforts to strengthen domestic drone manufacturing and adoption. A recent White House executive order, titled “Unleashing American Drone Dominance,” calls for faster UAS integration and expanded support for U.S.-made drones. The Department of Defense has also committed to approving a larger set of American products for military procurement while expanding the scope of the Blue UAS program.

Congress and federal agencies are signaling strong demand for secure and American-made solutions. Spirit’s clearance as both a system and a component aligns directly with those national priorities.

Exhibition and Company Background

Spirit has been Ascent’s flagship product since its introduction. It will be on display at the Ascent AeroSystems booth, number 727, at the Commercial UAV Expo 2025 in Las Vegas, September 2 through 4.

Founded in 2014, Ascent AeroSystems designs and manufactures rugged coaxial UAVs for defense, public safety, and industrial markets. Its cylindrical aircraft are highly portable, durable, and designed for reliability in mission-critical environments. In 2024 the company was acquired by Robinson Helicopter Company and now operates as a wholly owned subsidiary.

Spirit now stands alone as the only UAV to be cleared by DIU as both a complete system and an approved component. This distinction reflects its reliability, open architecture, and alignment with the Department of Defense’s push for modular, secure, and U.S.-made drone platforms. As national efforts to accelerate drone adoption continue, Spirit is well positioned to play a central role in future procurement and deployment strategies.
