Hallowell, ME-based mapping company Blue Marble Geographics will host a free webinar on Thursday, August 21, at 10:00 AM EDT, focusing on bathymetry and terrain analysis with their software Global Mapper Pro. This event, which also serves as the debut live show of the GEOTalks Podcast, aims to help participants understand how geographic information system (GIS) professionals solve spatial challenges in the real world.
The webinar, co-hosted by geospatial expert Gus Cooke, will explore how bathymetric data, used for mapping underwater terrain, can be accessed and analyzed. Attendees will see demonstrations on Global Mapper’s advanced features such as 3D visualization, breakline integration, and detailed workflows utilizing sonar or bathymetric lidar data. The session will cover topics like custom terrain shading, terrain painting, and using the Path Profile tool for data analysis.
A highlight of the event includes a presentation from the Survey Systems team, who will discuss how they conduct hydrographic surveys of the Colorado Riverbed using Global Mapper. They will explain their process for collecting, managing, and analyzing large datasets, generating 3D models, and ensuring accuracy in final survey outputs.
The webinar will conclude with a live question-and-answer session. Tomer Ketter, Director and Co-Founder of Map the Gaps, will participate in the panel. He brings two decades of experience in underwater mapping and will share perspectives on the evolving role of GIS in bathymetry, in addition to his experiences on global mapping expeditions.
