The Global UTM Association (GUTMA) recently hosted the “Harmonized Skies 2024” event in Fort Worth, Texas, focusing on advancing commercial Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone operations. This gathering brought together industry leaders, regulators, and public safety agencies to demonstrate unified BVLOS operations, aiming to enhance applications like drone delivery and drones as first responders.

Unified BVLOS Operations Demonstration

The Global Uncrewed Traffic Management Association (GUTMA) is a non-profit consortium of worldwide Uncrewed Aircraft Systems Traffic Management (UTM) stakeholders. Its purpose is to foster the safe, secure, and efficient integration of drones into national airspace systems. GUTMA supports and accelerates the transparent implementation of globally interoperable UTM systems, promoting a federated approach to UTM services and advocating for fair drone services markets.  Harmonized Skies is their annual flagship event – and this year the event marked important forward progress.

Amit Ganjoo, founder and CEO of ANRA Technologies, highlighted the significance of the event:

“Yesterday was a historic day at the GUTMA Harmonized Skies event in Texas! It was an honor to witness and be part of this groundbreaking demonstration of unified BVLOS operations, made possible through the collaboration of industry leaders Manna Drone Delivery, Wing, Zipline, DroneUp, ANRA Technologies, Federal Aviation Administration, public safety agencies Arlington PD, and support from NASA Ames Research Center.”

For the first time, public safety and commercial drone operators shared airspace powered by multiple Unmanned Aircraft Systems Traffic Management (UTM) systems. This collaboration marks a paradigm shift in airspace management, demonstrating the potential for safe and scalable drone operations.

Role of UTM Systems

ANRA Technologies‘ NOON UTM system provided strategic coordination for both Arlington Police Department and Manna Drone Delivery. This support enabled the first-ever public safety and commercial drone operations in shared airspace. Simultaneously, Wing operated on their vertically integrated UTM platform, showcasing interoperability among different systems.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been instrumental in facilitating these developments. The FAA’s UTM Key Site Operational Evaluation in the Dallas-Fort Worth area focuses on leveraging public-private partnerships to safely enable routine drone operations. This initiative builds on previous validation activities and aims to influence future policy through data and findings.

Global Regulatory Engagement

The event attracted over 30 regulators from around the world, underscoring the global interest in advancing BVLOS operations. Their participation highlights the importance of international collaboration in developing standards and policies for drone integration.

Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) is essential for the full integration of commercial drones into national airspace. UTM systems provide a framework for managing drone traffic, ensuring safe and efficient operations alongside manned aircraft. They facilitate real-time communication between drone operators, service providers, and regulatory authorities, enabling coordinated and conflict-free flights. By implementing UTM, the industry can support complex operations such as BVLOS flights, which are crucial for applications like drone delivery and emergency response. The development and deployment of robust UTM systems are vital for scaling commercial drone operations and realizing their full potential.

Looking Ahead

The success of Harmonized Skies 2024 sets a new standard for safe, scalable, and interoperable airspace management. As Amit Ganjoo stated, “This is just the beginning… we are committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in BVLOS and UTM.”

The event signifies a significant step forward in integrating drones into national airspace systems, paving the way for expanded commercial applications and enhanced public safety operations.
