FAA Clears MONTIS Drone for U.S. Avalanche Control Operations

July 9, 2026 by Ian McNabb Leave a Comment

Nebraska-based drone maker secures a legal framework for U.S. commercial deployment of its remote avalanche mitigation system.

Drone Amplified announced July 8, 2026, that the Federal Aviation Administration has granted regulatory approval for the operation of its MONTIS avalanche control drone. The Lincoln-based company says the decision provides a clear legal framework for U.S. customers to conduct drone-based avalanche control operations.

What MONTIS does

Avalanche mitigation traditionally relies on manned helicopters, fixed explosive towers, artillery and ground crews. According to Drone Amplified, transportation departments, ski resorts and private operators can now integrate MONTIS alongside those tools to remotely trigger controlled avalanches from a safe distance.

The company says the FAA pathway recognizes the safety and reliability of its integrated hardware and software. Drone Amplified developed MONTIS with explosives suppliers Austin Powder and CIL Avalanche, integrating field-proven ignition and explosive technology used by safety professionals for decades.

Key advantages of the MONTIS avalanche control drone

Drone Amplified cites four primary benefits of the system:

  • Reduced crew exposure by removing personnel from hazardous avalanche paths.

  • Operational flexibility, with MONTIS working as a primary tool, a backup or a supplement to helicopters and ground crews.

  • Integrated reliability from the engineering team behind the company’s IGNIS aerial ignition system used in wildfire operations.

  • Industry collaboration with established explosives partners.

CEO on the FAA milestone

“Our mission is simple: use robotics to make the most dangerous jobs safer,” said Carrick Detweiler, chief executive of Drone Amplified. “Avalanche mitigation crews protect communities and keep critical infrastructure open every single day. This landmark FAA approval is a testament to the rigorous engineering behind MONTIS and our close collaboration with partners like the Alaska Department of Transportation.”

Drone Amplified designs hardware and software for hazardous environmental mitigation, including wildfire and avalanche operations. The company grew out of research at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and maintains offices in Nebraska and New Jersey.
