Archer First Response Systems, Drone Rescue Systems Complete Latest ASTM Standards for Drone Parachute Recovery Systems

by DRONELIFE Staff Writer Ian J. McNabb

Archer First Response Systems recently announced that they were the first to successfully complete the latest F3322-22 ASTM Standard for the certification of Parachute Recovery systems on small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS). In collaboration with Northern Plains UAS, Drone Rescue Systems, and Freefly Systems, ArcherFRS completed 45 different flight scenarios and could then certify the Drone Rescue System’s DRS-Alta X parachute recovery system for Freefly’s Alta X. This is an important first step for Archer as they seek to start emergency first response drone deployments in the state of Florida. Archer’s goal is to use this drone setup to deliver lifesaving medical care to remote or inaccessible areas, especially by delivering Naloxone, used to reverse overdoses, or AED defibrillator devices used during cases of cardiac arrest.

ASTM stands for the American Society of Testing and Materials.  ASTM is an independent standards organization that sets the bar against which many emerging technologies will be judged, aiding them in receiving regulatory approval. The F3322-22 standard that ArcherFRS just completed tests parachutes designed to avoid injuries from falling drones, which is a significant hurdle for adoption in many BVLOS drone applications. According to ASTM’s website, “Compliance with this specification is intended to support an applicant in obtaining permission from a civil aviation authority (CAA) to fly an sUA over people.”, which is an extremely important step for Archer’s operations aiding first responders and EMTs.

ArcherFRS is using the Freefly Alta X platform to provide their services. Drone Rescue Systems’ new technology should encourage the adoption of their emergency UAV systems for 911 services around Florida, the United States, and beyond, especially with their RapidSOS integrations. The new parachute system for the Alta X, now ASTM-certified, is available from Drone Rescue Systems and their partners.
