AeroVironment Tops List of Technavio’s Multirotor UAV Vendors

Technavio has identified who they believe will be the top five leading vendors for the global multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) market  for the period 2015-2019. The firm’s analysis is contained in a recent report that also lists five other prominent vendors who are expected to contribute to this market’s growth over the forecast period.

To identify the top vendors, Technavio’s market research analysts have considered the top contributors to the overall revenue of this market. The report provides market segmentation by system, and market growth prospects by region (APAC, EMEA, and the Americas).

“Shift toward solar-powered UAVs is likely to emerge as a key trend for the global multirotor UAV market during the course of the forecast period. UAV capabilities are continuously getting enhanced due to advances in technology. Innovations in solar technology, in particular, have led to the creation of UAVs that are powered by solar energy. These UAVs provide high endurance of about 300 hours and are capable of reaching double the height in comparison to traditional UAVs. Some solar-powered UAVs can stay in the air for months or years and can withstand temperatures up to 140°F,” said Abhay Singh, one of Technavio’s lead analysts for defense technology research.

“Leveraging the market potential with these enhanced capabilities, UAV vendors are competing in terms of cost, technology, product efficiency, and life cycle. Thanks to these trends, market competition is increasing making technology cost-effective for end-customers,” added Abhay.

AeroVironment

AeroVironment was founded in 1971 and is headquartered in California, US. It designs, develops, produces, supports, and operates a portfolio of electric transportation solutions and electric-powered unmanned aircraft systems.

As of April 2015, the company had 663 employees and generated revenue of close to USD 259.39 million and spent around USD 46.5 million on R&D for the fiscal year that ended in April 2015. The subsidiaries of the company include AV Massachusetts, Regenerative Fuel Cell Systems, and SkyTower.

Cyberhawk Innovations was established in 2008 and is headquartered in Livingston, UK. They provide aerial inspections using unmanned aerial vehicles worldwide. Their clients include Total, SSE, Statoil, Maersk, RWE, Apache, Enquest, CNR, Ineos, Shell, BP, Chevron, and Exxon.

The company offers services such as industrial inspections for onshore oil and gas, offshore oil and gas, and power and utilities and land surveying for utilities, civil engineering, and government and public bodies. The company also offers iHawk, an innovative cloud-based platform allowing utility companies to access data collected by the UAVs.

DJI Innovations

The company’s R&D division focuses on launching innovative products and solutions to gain an edge over its competitors. In July 2015, the company launched a robotic container management and storage system for use in ports.
