AeroVironment Acquires ESAero in $200M Deal, Expanding Engineering Capabilities for Defense and Autonomous Aircraft

March 17, 2026 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

Acquisition adds advanced aircraft design and manufacturing expertise as the defense drone industry continues to consolidate.

U.S. drone manufacturer AeroVironment (NASDAQ: AVAV) has acquired aerospace engineering firm Empirical Systems Aerospace in a deal valued at approximately $200 million, expanding the company’s engineering capabilities as demand for unmanned aircraft systems continues to grow.

According to reporting by Reuters, ESAero will become part of AeroVironment’s Precision Strike and Defense Systems group following the transaction. The division develops a range of military technologies, including loitering munitions often referred to as “kamikaze drones.”

The acquisition reflects ongoing consolidation in the defense drone sector as companies move to integrate aircraft design, advanced propulsion technologies, and autonomous systems development under a single organization.

AeroVironment Expands Its Defense Technology Portfolio

AeroVironment has long been known for producing small unmanned aircraft used by military forces around the world for reconnaissance and tactical operations. In recent years, the company has expanded its focus to include precision strike systems and counter-drone technologies.

The ESAero purchase follows another major move by the company in 2025, when AeroVironment acquired BlueHalo in a deal valued at approximately $4.1 billion, significantly expanding its defense technology capabilities.

That acquisition added expertise in directed energy systems, electronic warfare, and counter-UAS technology. Together, the two deals suggest a broader strategy aimed at building a vertically integrated portfolio of autonomous defense technologies.

As Reuters reported, AeroVironment CEO Wahid Nawabi said the ESAero acquisition supports the company’s efforts to address the needs of a rapidly expanding defense technology market.

ESAero Brings Aircraft Design and Engineering Expertise

While AeroVironment is best known for producing operational drone platforms, ESAero specializes in the engineering and development side of aerospace systems.

Based in California, ESAero focuses on the design, integration, and manufacturing of advanced aircraft technologies, including unmanned aircraft systems and advanced air mobility platforms.

The company provides engineering services that include aircraft design, rapid prototyping, flight testing, and aerospace manufacturing. ESAero also has experience developing electric propulsion and distributed propulsion systems for aircraft.

Rather than serving primarily as a standalone drone manufacturer, ESAero has built a reputation as a technical partner for aerospace companies and government programs seeking to accelerate aircraft development.

Industry Demand for Autonomous Systems Continues to Grow

The acquisition comes as defense organizations around the world increase investments in unmanned systems, autonomous aircraft, and counter-drone technologies.

Small drones now play a growing role in reconnaissance, surveillance, and precision strike missions. At the same time, governments are investing heavily in technologies designed to detect and defeat hostile drones.

Companies like AeroVironment are responding by expanding their engineering and manufacturing capabilities to accelerate development cycles for new systems.

By bringing ESAero’s aircraft design and prototyping expertise in-house, AeroVironment may be better positioned to develop next-generation autonomous aircraft and defense platforms.

A Sign of Broader Industry Consolidation

The deal also reflects a broader trend within the drone and defense technology sector. As demand for autonomous systems increases, aerospace companies are acquiring specialized engineering firms to strengthen their development pipelines.

Combining aircraft design expertise with operational drone platforms allows manufacturers to move more quickly from concept to production.

For AeroVironment, the ESAero acquisition represents another step in building an integrated technology stack that spans aircraft development, autonomous systems, and precision strike capabilities.

As governments continue to prioritize unmanned technologies in defense planning, such consolidation may become increasingly common across the global drone industry.
