Electra.aero Chosen for Federal Advanced Air Mobility Program

March 10, 2026 by staff Leave a Comment

Electra.aero has been named the premier private company participant in the Trump Administration’s inaugural Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing and Advanced Air Mobility Integration Pilot Program, or eIPP, according to a company announcement. The U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration selected Electra to work with state and local partners on new frameworks and regulations for advanced air mobility and to place the company’s aircraft into demonstration operations with those partners.

‘An Historic Moment in Advanced Air Mobility’

“This is an historic moment in Advanced Air Mobility, as Electra stands shoulder to shoulder with others in the space to chart a course that will transform the way we travel,” said Marc Allen, Electra’s chief executive. “Our entire team thanks President Trump, Secretary Duffy, and Administrator Bedford for their visionary leadership to accelerate the adoption of AAM.”

Mr. Allen said the Administration “is opening the door for an American company to demonstrate how hybrid-electric propulsion works at scale, to reimagine how we use the skies, and to change the way that people get to where they want to go. It’s American innovation at its best, and it showcases how Electra’s Ultra Short has become an essential part of the AAM landscape.”

Ultra Short Aircraft and Direct Aviation

Electra says its Ultra Short aircraft uses hybrid-electric propulsion and a high-lift configuration that enables takeoff and landing in about 150 feet. The airplane is designed to offer meaningful payload and practical range with lower noise and operating costs than helicopters and many electric vertical takeoff and landing designs, while maintaining what the company describes as uncompromising safety.

The Ultra Short platform underpins Electra’s “Direct Aviation” concept, which focuses on point-to-point travel from small access points rather than traditional airports. The company says this approach can help travelers avoid long surface trips and congested hubs while supporting missions that range from business travel to family trips.

Regional Demonstrations in Four States

Under the federal program, Electra plans Ultra Short aircraft demonstrations with public and private partners in Florida, the New York–New Jersey corridor, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana. In Florida, the company will collaborate on an Ultra Short Access Point demonstration that evaluates candidate routes across the state and uses partnerships with Vertiports by Atlantic and regional airline operators.

In the New York–New Jersey region, Electra is supporting a proposed route between New Jersey and New York City in collaboration with infrastructure providers including Signature Aviation and Vertiports by Atlantic, using existing heliport infrastructure.

In Pennsylvania, Electra is working with a state-led coalition on an Ultra Short Access Point demonstration that links Atlantic City to regional destinations, including feeder service into Philadelphia International Airport (KPHL). The effort will use existing aviation assets such as state test sites and medical centers to validate trips of 50 to 500 miles with regional airline partners and Ultra Short aircraft.

Electra also supports an initiative led by the State of Louisiana through its partnership with Bristow Group Inc., which the company describes as a global leader in innovative and sustainable vertical flight solutions.

Technical Ambitions and Customer Commitments

Electra describes its EL9 Ultra Short as a hybrid-electric aircraft that delivers 2.5 times the payload and 10 times the range of helicopters and electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles, with 70 percent lower operating costs and significantly reduced certification risk. The company says its Ultra Short technology is designed to fly people and cargo “seamlessly without airports, emissions, or noise.”

The company reports more than 2,200 letters of intent from over 60 commercial customers, including airlines and helicopter operators. Electra’s contracted customers include NASA, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Navy, according to the announcement.

More information is available from Electra’s website.
