Terra Drone to Launch Japan-Made Drone Battery Business

July 27, 2026 by Ian McNabb 1 Comment

The Tokyo-listed company will mass-produce cylindrical-cell battery packs in Japan to reduce reliance on Chinese suppliers and serve NDAA-compliant defense customers.

Terra Drone Corporation will mass-produce drone battery packs in Japan, the company announced July 27, 2026. The Tokyo-listed company will use cylindrical cells for its own industrial and defense drones. It will also sell the packs to third-party drone manufacturers in Japan and overseas. The move builds on Terra Drone’s full-scale entry into the defense equipment market in early 2026.

Why Japan-made drone batteries matter

Japan’s Cabinet Secretariat reports more than 447,000 registered unmanned aircraft weighing 100 grams (about 3.5 ounces) or more as of December 2025. Registrations are growing at an annual rate above 15%. Chinese suppliers hold roughly 90% of the global industrial drone market. Japan depends on overseas supply for the high-output cylindrical-cell batteries drones require. No domestic Japanese company meets the combined output, scale, price and defense-grade delivery requirements. The Japanese government has flagged batteries as critical drone components exposed to supply chain risk.

Cylindrical cells and NDAA compliance

Terra Drone will use cylindrical cells rather than pouch cells. The company cites durability and safety against mechanical shock and vibration. Cylindrical cells hold roughly 90% share of Ukraine’s defense drone battery market. Terra Drone will use non-Chinese components that meet U.S. NDAA compliance standards. Its unnamed Japanese business partner has supplied about 500,000 battery packs to major consumer electronics manufacturers. The partner will provide facilities, personnel and quality control while Terra Drone defines specifications.

Sales network and outlook

Terra Drone plans to sell the packs to heavy industry firms, domestic startups, overseas drone manufacturers and Japanese defense primes. Batteries account for more than one-quarter of a drone’s price, driving recurring replacement demand. The company will use its overseas offices and existing sales network, which also supports subsidiaries Unifly and Aloft Technologies. Terra Drone plans to expand domestic production to motors and controllers next.
