Permission Granted for Urban Drone Operations Over Boston
Draganfly Inc. announced that it has received a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) waiver allowing its small unmanned aircraft (sUA) to operate over people and moving vehicles. This waiver permits operations in urban areas and represents a significant step in advancing drone use for public safety, infrastructure inspection, and other applications.
FAA Waiver for Urban Operations
The waiver, granted under 14 CFR §§ 107.39 and 107.145, enables Draganfly to fly drones over individuals who are not involved in the operation and over moving traffic. These operations will follow a prescribed route over Boston, showcasing the company’s ability to meet stringent FAA safety standards in dense urban environments.
“Securing this FAA waiver underscores the trust and confidence we have built with regulatory authorities and reflects the safety and strength of our UAV platforms,” said Cameron Chell, CEO of Draganfly Inc.
The company highlights the importance of this waiver for urban deployments, particularly for applications that include:
- Public Safety Missions: Providing support for emergency response and law enforcement activities.
- Infrastructure Inspection: Monitoring critical assets in populated areas without disrupting regular activities.
- Specialized Missions: Supporting unique urban operations requiring high safety standards.
Advancing Drone Integration in Urban Settings
Draganfly’s sUA systems include advanced airspace management tools and precision controls to ensure compliance with FAA regulations. According to Coty Vann, UAS Programs Director and project manager for the Boston initiative, the waiver represents a broader opportunity.
“This waiver is not only a regulatory achievement but a significant step forward in scaling drone operations in the urban landscape,” said Vann. “We are proud to pioneer UAV missions that make meaningful contributions to industries and communities alike.”
Significance for the Drone Industry
The FAA waiver aligns with growing efforts to integrate drones into urban areas while maintaining high safety standards. By obtaining this approval, Draganfly demonstrates its readiness to support defense, government, and commercial partners in addressing complex challenges.
As regulations evolve, the company aims to expand its role in urban drone operations. These advancements reflect the increasing demand for reliable UAV solutions across multiple sectors, including public safety, infrastructure, and specialized missions.
