Archer Aviation Unveils Plans for Los Angeles Air Taxi Network

August 9, 2024 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

Los Angeles air taxi network aims to reduce travel time with 10-20 minute electric flights across Southern California by 2026

Archer Aviation Inc. has announced plans to establish an air mobility network in Los Angeles, aiming to transform the way residents and visitors commute and travel in Southern California. The network is designed to significantly reduce travel time, replacing one-to-two-hour car drives with 10-20 minute flights using Archer’s electric Midnight aircraft.

Los Angeles Air Taxi Network: Key Locations and Partnerships

Archer’s planned network includes strategic take-off and landing locations at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Orange County, Santa Monica, Hollywood Burbank, Long Beach, and Van Nuys. The company is targeting 2026 as the start of operations for its LA network.

In addition to these locations, Archer is coordinating with the Los Angeles Rams and Hollywood Park to explore the possibility of exclusive vertiports in the area. Hollywood Park, a nearly 300-acre district centered around SoFi Stadium, could become a key hub in this network.

The University of Southern California (USC) is also collaborating with Archer on the development of the LA network. Over the next two years, Archer and USC plan to convert existing heliports into vertiports for Midnight and other vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. This partnership aims to provide visitors with a quick, sustainable way to access USC’s campus, sports facilities, and hospitals.

Aiming for a Faster, Safer, and Sustainable Alternative

Archer’s Midnight aircraft, a piloted four-passenger electric vehicle, is central to this new network. Designed for sustainability, low noise, and safety, Midnight is capable of transforming hour-long ground commutes into mere minutes in the air.

According to Archer, Midnight offers several advantages:

  • It travels at speeds up to 150 mph, enabling rapid transportation across the city.
  • The aircraft is designed for continuous short flights, requiring minimal charge time between trips.
  • It operates at noise levels 100 times quieter than a helicopter at cruising altitudes.
  • Its redundant systems allow Archer to target safety standards similar to those of commercial airliners.

Adam Goldstein, CEO of Archer, emphasized the significance of the LA network in light of upcoming global events in the region. “This is a big moment for Archer. Establishing our LA network ahead of the global events that are coming to the region over the next four years is a milestone that will put Midnight on display for the whole world to see,” he stated. Goldstein also noted the infamous LA traffic, highlighting Archer’s goal “to offer a safer, faster, and sustainable alternative travel option.”

Supporting Innovation and Clean Energy

California Governor Gavin Newsom praised Archer’s initiative, stating, “California is showing the world what’s possible when you embrace innovation, entrepreneurship, and clean energy to help solve your biggest challenges. Homegrown companies like Archer Aviation are pioneering the next generation of zero-emission transportation that will help California cut pollution, clean our air, and reduce traffic.”

Los Angeles Rams President Kevin Demoff also expressed enthusiasm about the potential collaboration with Archer at Hollywood Park. “This underscores our commitment to enhancing the guest experience as we continue to build this transformative global destination for sports and entertainment,” he said.

Complementing Existing Networks

This announcement builds on Archer’s previous plans for an air taxi network in the San Francisco Bay Area and its recent partnerships with Southwest Airlines and United Airlines. It also follows significant milestones for the company, including a successful transition flight, certification to operate as a commercial airline, and rapid progress on its manufacturing facility in Covington, GA.

Archer’s efforts reflect a broader vision of revolutionizing urban transportation by offering a faster, cleaner, and more efficient alternative to traditional ground travel. The Los Angeles air taxi network, if realized, could be a major step toward achieving this goal.
