This video of a drone firing a handgun is making the rounds online today and the Twittersphere has been calling it “terrifying” and “scary.”
However, as with most viral content on the internet, there is probably more to this story than a 15 second clip of a quadcopter shooting a gun four times.
For one thing, the authenticity of the video has yet to be confirmed despite the best efforts of The Guardian, Mashable, and The Verge.
For another, equipping a drone with a weapon is illegal so if the creator of the drone is American (which The Verge has pointed out is probably the case), he is breaking the law.
And finally, it’s not like this is the first or the last time drones have carried weapons…
I’m not saying that’s a good thing or a bad thing, just expressing my surprise at everyone’s surprise.
We have seen drones deliver booze and film people having sex so isn’t giving a drone a gun and inevitable progression of the evolution of new technology?
