Nineteen incoming flights were diverted after unidentified drones were observed near and over the airport
Unauthorized drone activity temporarily halted flights at Luxembourg Airport on the night of September 18. The incident diverted 19 incoming flights and prompted a coordinated government response.
According to the Luxembourg government, unidentified and unauthorized drones were visually observed in the airspace around Findel, where the airport is located.
Airport officials immediately closed the airspace as a safety precaution. The closure protected passengers, flight crews, airport employees and aircraft, the government said.
Operations resumed at about 1:20 a.m. on September 19. Officials reopened the airport after two inspections found no immediate risk to aviation safety.
The airport’s operator, lux-Airport, said the aircraft were first detected near the airport and later over the airfield. It warned that delays could continue while airlines restored their normal schedules.
Government Coordinates Investigation
Luxembourg activated its interministerial drone assessment group following the incident. Prime Minister Luc Frieden met with Defense and Mobility Minister Yuriko Backes, Interior Minister Léon Gloden and the agencies involved.
Authorities said the available information did not support any final conclusions. They continued reviewing collected information with foreign partners.
The government has not identified the drones, their operators or their point of origin. It has also provided no information about a possible motive.
On September 20, officials said they had deployed additional detection resources, including equipment supplied by foreign partners. Police also investigated several later reports of suspected drones in Luxembourg’s airspace.
Those reports did not require an operational response. Officials said many of the sightings appeared to involve navigation lights from crewed aircraft.
A further government update issued September 21 said the assessment group remained active. Authorities continue to monitor and analyze the situation.
Why the Incident Matters
The closure shows how reports of unauthorized drones can affect a major airport even without a collision or confirmed hostile act. Luxembourg Airport serves passenger airlines and is also the home base of cargo carrier Cargolux.
The incident follows other recent European airport closures linked to reported drone sightings. Copenhagen, Oslo, Munich, Brussels and Liège temporarily suspended flights during a series of incidents in late 2025. European authorities have heightened security around airports and other critical infrastructure amid the war in Ukraine and wider concerns about hostile drone activity. However, officials have not connected the Luxembourg sightings to Russia, Ukraine or any other state actor. Authorities have not identified an operator or motive, and the investigation remains open.
The incident also highlights the challenge of confirming drone sightings near airports. Luxembourg added detection resources after the closure, while officials later determined that several reported sightings involved conventional aircraft.
