It’s no secret drones are becoming increasingly popular on America’s farms. As demand for drone data rises, so too do the number of companies that can provide it. Despite the FAA’s supposed restriction on the use of agricultural drones, the space is attracting more dollars and getting more crowded every day.
If you are looking to fly on the farm, it is important to identify exactly what your goal is before you buy so you can find the platform that best aligns with your needs. After all, these drones require a significant investment of both time and money.
To help get you started, here are some of the companies that have emerged as key players in the space and provide some of the most comprehensive aerial agricultural solutions on the market.
AgDrone:
Oregon-based HoneyComb provides an all-in-one hardware/software/data storage solution with their AgDrone. The drone itself can be outfitted with an array of sensors including thermal imaging, stereoscopic and multispectral NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). All data collected by the AgDrone is stored on the HoneyComb servers and can be accessed from any computer but the package includes a tablet that puts control and data acquisition literally at your finger tips.
Autonomous flights can be plotted and saved right on the tablet. There is no need for any extra hardware.
eBee Ag:
senseFly’s eBee Ag drone is a version of its popular eBee platform custom-fit to fly down on the farm. The drone comes standard with an infrared camera, but optional add ons can give users the capability to create 3D thermal maps of a field.
senseFly’s eMotion flight planning and control software (for PCs and Windows tablets) allows users to plan and simulate a flight before takeoff and then monitor the flight or make edits to the route while the drone is in the air. eMotion is also compatible with Google Earth.
Lancaster:
PrecisionHawk’s Lancaster is a soup-to-nuts solution constructed with first time flyers in mind. The purchase of a Lancaster includes a free 30 minute online class, but PrecisionHawk offers options for hands on training at one of their sites or they can come to you.
The sensor package includes LIDAR and Hyperspectral imaging along with the standard thermal/visual/multispectral and it can be spec-ed out depending on your needs. PrecisionHawk also touts the Lancaster’s ‘brain’ – a basic artificial intelligence that detects weather conditions to create its own optimal flight path in real time and assess data from the sensors as it is collected, eliminating the need for a second flight.
Crop Mapper:
Based in Toulouse, France, Delair-Tech offers industry-specific packages that can be outfitted to either of their DT-18 or DT-26 UAVs. Included with the purchase of either drone is a five day training program.
The Crop Mapper package is best suited for projects that cover a large area. The package comes standard with Delair’s Solapp flight control software and Pix4D‘s Mapper imaging processing software.
AG550:
Longtime UAS distributor Aerial Technology International recently jumped into the world of agriculture and began selling custom multi-rotor drones that can be configured with all the standard cameras and sensors. While multi-rotor drones don’t have the same extensive battery life as a fixed-wing model, they are much more agile and can be flown very close to the ground (they also tend to be much cheaper).
Plus, ATI offers a free consultation with each inquiry they receive so you can be sure your drone is optimized for your needs.
Quad Indago:
Another multi-rotor solution on the market is Farm Intelligence2‘s Quad Indago. This collapsable drone sports Lockheed Martin Procerus Technologies’ Kestrel 3 autopilot and a powerful ground station laptop to support it. The system also comes standard with FI2’s Dual Band Sensor with near infrared and ultra-HD RGB capabilities.
The price tag on the Indago might be a little scary but it’s certainly one of the most advanced quadcopters money can buy.
AgEagle:
The nature of farm equipment is that it takes a serious beating over time. In anticipation of this issue, the AgEagle is outfitted with a composite shell of fiberglass and carbon fiber cloth in addition to a poly carbonate skid plate. It’s an aerial tank that can fly in winds up to 20 miles an hour.
The complete AgEagle package comes standard with the aircraft, launcher, camera, software and appropriate training.

Hello!
Our agriculture UAV products are currently in two distinct categories, with different uses.
Fixed-Wing UAVs are for large scale applications and require a small amount of human interaction (launching and providing a landing space). Our multirotor UAVs are capable of functioning completely autonomously once set up with our wireless charging kit and automatic media kit. These are best for monitoring specialty crops and/or specific areas.
Our fixed wing StratoScout series has three models:
The StratoScout which is gas-powered and can fly up to one hour on a single tank is priced at $5000.
The StratoScout Electric which is electric powered and can fly up to one hour on a single charge (although we do offer extra batteries to extend flight time) sells for $8750.
The StratoScout Endurance can fly up to four hours and sells for $10,000.
The StratoScout Hercules offers the greatest flight time on the market and can fly up to eight hours and sells for $40,000.
These are all GPS equipped and can fly autonomously with waypoints.
We also offer IR, NDVI, visual, multrispectral and LIDAR sensors that are available through us. If you want to add a custom sensor, we can do that for you too.
We offer accessories such as an instant media kit, and emergency parachute and others.
All StratoScout UAVs come with GIS and 3D mapping software.

Hey Rodney,
Some of the ways you can use drone technology in staple crops is to assess NDVI levels to monitor the health of your crops, check for harvest readiness, pests and even to apply pesticides! There are many more applications, if you want to know them all just contact me. I also noticed that you have 1000 acres of farmland. This means you will likely need a long flight time drone, my company offers a series agriculture drones that can fly as long as 8 hours. We look forward to delivering you the best solution we can.
Thanks,
Tapabrata

Thank you for sharing the best agricultural drones on the market today. It’s true that drones are becoming increasingly popular on America’s farms. It is important to identify your goal before buying because drones require a significant investment of both time and money. This has been helpful to see some of the companies who have emerged as key players in the space and provide comprehensive aerial agricultural solutions. Thanks!

I have been asked several times as a regular user of the Sensefly eBee if it is reliable and a good buy. We have been using it now for over a year. Well, if you are a wealthy adrenalin junkie, this might be a good choice. It is very sensitive to winds (once you reach 6 m/s, the pictures degrade, mis-shots, and especially inaccurate hard landings with a lot of glue for repairs) and requires very good wide open flat and soft surface. It is impossible to land manually (unstable design) and very stressful/risky semi-manually. Automatic? Well read again the post… 😉 5-6m accuracy is a large lateral distance to predict the point of…impact. Better cut all trees in the area, remove every stone and every protuberance and make sure there is no water in the region. Nets? Try again, you might snap the probe on the top (static and pitot plus LED). If anything breaks related to the flight controller (including the probe)… goodbye your eBee for several weeks and high price tag (don’t try the guarantee, LOL). It is very highly priced for what it is, especially considering the customer service that will do whatever to make sure you will not return it or will pay again a good amount for its repair. On the software side, no complaints, both for the e-motion and Postflight Terra. But if you operate in a hilly or windy place, it is not a good investment and you are better using Pixhawk with a cheaper frame. With Pixhawk (and mission planner) you have also auto-takeoff (almost) and auto-landing. If you want, you can fit a DGPS (high accuracy, which is especially great for landings). You can also put vertical sensors (laser, acoustic etc.) to help for your landings. You can fly manually (depending on your design), land manually if needed, abort landings etc. etc. You can fit a better camera or sensors, …have a more peaceful life and better savings.
Marcus Dien says
I’ve been on eBee coming to 2 years and I TOTALLY agree with your comments.
First of all, this is a bloody high priced equipment. Apart from the software emotion which I have very high regards on, this drone is totally not worth it’s price. The maintenance is too costly. just to get you in the picture, it costs USD250 for a baterry, that’s the standard 3s 1800 mah baterry which I believe once can get it at USD20 at Hobbyking.
I get frustrated with the never ending camera malfunction error message when the camera is actually doing fine. We actually bought 4 units of eBee spare camera and trust me, it’s not cheap even though it’s just a modified Canon Powershot Ixus.
So I definitely do not recommend this product, very very poor customer service, almost everything about it is too expensive. Once the eBee reaches 70 flights, we had nightmares after nightmares with the parts from motor to radio, you name it. Having said all these, I give emotion and Pix4D Postflight Terra a super big applause. The Switz had gone so far to make the navigation software so dummy proof that anyone with zero RC background would know how to operate it.
We are on APM 2.6 with Mission Planner too now, on Event 38’s E384 skywalker 1900mm body with a so much better 20 mpx Samsung NX1100 camera. Longer endurance close to 90minutes, Sensefly eBee is barely 30minutes.

With more than 50 flights under my belt with the AgEagle, it is certainly the most robust, simplest and economical of any ag UAV we’ve seen. Just does the job with no fuss.

The Ag Eagle dealers and product development manager (http://agtechtalk.com/2014/04/06/agtechtalk-flies-ag-eagles-in-kansas-colbyuas/) sure like taking their shots at Drone Life for not being included on the 6 best ag drones list.
Drone Life, guess you won’t make that mistake again!!
Closed circuit to Ag Eagle supporters. . . your product isn’t as good as you think it is. It could be as simple as this, the original title was “The 6 best ag drones” Maybe you just didn’t make the cut. Apparently you made the cut on the revision and can be considered the 7th best ag drone. I feel bad for drone life having to put up with such over the top whining. Doesn’t seem very classy or professional in my opinion.
Tom Nichol says
Curt,
You may have missed my post commending the folks at dronelife. Also, please note that when I posted my two comments, I used my complete name (not just an anonymous first name) and that I was obviously affiliated with AgEagle.
The companies listed are all good firms and while we may be competitors, all are working to move the industry ahead while battling against a cumbersome regulatory environment and public misconception. During all this, there will be winners and losers, much in the same way as during the early auto manufacturing industry. Personally, I admire the players, both well funded and those who are bootstrapping their efforts, as we try our very best to bring this budding industry to a higher level each day.
Christina Engh says
Thank you everyone for providing a more complete list. I am surprised to not see RoboFlight. I worked in the FAA AFS-80 (UAS Integration Office) office for the last 2 1/2 years writing policy and have keen insight into the way forward. It is interesting to see how many companies are trying to get into this market and we can already see companies teaming together. As I continue to sit on unmanned aircraft committees, I am most surprised that NONE of these companies are attending the various committees developing standards. Hopefully we will see more of these companies getting involved to drive industry standards.
Tom Nichol says
Christina,
Thank you for your service in the FAA office, but I would like to defend, if I may, as to why many of the companies building and marketing UAVs are not involved with standards committees.
I can’t speak for others here, but our company simply doesn’t have the financial resources, time or available personnel to attend the numerous meetings of the various government agencies and officials involved. Yes, we have written letters, sent emails and made phone calls, but that’s about all we can offer. We’re in the shop building, testing, marketing and selling. We’re forming coalitions with vendors and suppliers. In other words, we’re “doing” and not “discussing”. It would be great if we could just take time off from the shop and spend several days traveling to conferences, meetings, symposiums and reviewing the issues, but that doesn’t pay the bills or salaries, so we ask our federal and state representatives to keep watch for us. For a politician, anything that involves the world of “drones” is a hot potato!
A couple of years ago, our company CEO offered to be a part of the discussion and was invited provide his input, but whenever he asked how the rules were developing, he was told that the proposed rules could not be discussed because they hadn’t been written. It quickly became obvious that the communication was only one way. Not once have we received a call or email from the FAA directly asking us what we see as important and needed in regards to UAS operations for small systems. Sure, there are webiste forms, but I’m talking one-on-one. My hunch is that none of the others in this drone list have ever received a call from an official either.
Some fear that the UAV commercial application rules for lightweight vehicles (like the AgEagle) will be akin to the Obamacare program; We won’t know what’s in it until it’s passed. At times it feels like the invitation for involvement is only window dressing and other more powerful manufacturers will have the rules written to benefit them. I could be wrong, but only time will tell.
I do want to emphasize that there are those in civil service that work diligently to help and I can only cheer them on and firmly believe they will be successful.
Thank you.

How about AutoCopter? been around a while? flies for 2 hours with a tetracam?

I was contacted this morning by the folks at dronelife.com and they were very supportive about posting information about AgEagle. While some on line publications would have simply ignored the comments, or deleted them altogether, the staff at dronelife.com responded, and for that, they are to be commended.
Rick says
I am not sure where you got your facts or how you came up with this list, but you obviously have not done any research into the agricultural use of drones. I have been researching and using drones in agriculture for over two years and have never heard of a few of these on your list. The top drone in use in agriculture today is probably the AgEagle, yet it is not even on your list, nor is it even listed in your “buy a drone” product page. There is enough misinformation on the web today about drones, please don’t throw out more propaganda about who makes the best drone; show some data, numbers, or something to back up your claims.
Aaron Sahlstrom says
Our company provides precision agriculture consulting, particularly in the area of UAS. I am really surprised to see mention of AgBee, ATI and Honeycomb when we have yet to see their products in the fields. We chose AgEagle as a product farmers can actually use themselves, rather than something cobbled together by techies and hobbiests. Follow us at @aculorservices.
Jeff Frank says
Hi
Why don’t you mention AgEagle? According to the research I’ve done they have sold more UAVS than your six combined.
Tom Nichol says
I find it rather odd that your article failed to mention AgEagle in Neodesha, KS. Not only has AgEagle been involved in the early development of platforms specifically for agriculture, the AgEagle has been featured in numerous stories on a wide variety of media platforms, most recently the Wall Street Journal, AgTechTalk, Farm Journal Media, John Deere’s The Furrow and more.
While many other UAV companies have burst on the scene, created a marketing flurry and quickly disappeared in a cloud of smoke and mirrors, AgEagle continues to grow with sales across the US, Canada, Australia and soon in the UK and Europe.
Finally, the price for the complete system, ready to fly and process the images, is only $13,500 and that INCLUDES the training program.
James L says
This list seems kind of bogus, if any research had been put into it you would have seen that the best drone buy is the AgEagle at AgEagle.com.
