Matternet Expands NHS Drone Delivery Network to Children’s Hospital in London

October 20, 2026 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

New service at Great Ormond Street Hospital aims to speed laboratory testing as medical drone deliveries expand across London.

Matternet has expanded its National Health Service (NHS) drone delivery network to include Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) in London. The service transports urgent medical samples to nearby laboratories, helping doctors receive test results sooner.

The expansion, announced October 20, builds on Matternet’s partnership with UK healthcare logistics company Apian. According to Matternet, drones can reduce urgent sample transport times by up to 90% compared with existing delivery methods.

The service initially connects Great Ormond Street Hospital with laboratories operated by The Doctors Laboratory (TDL). The partners plan to add more locations as the network grows.

Faster Testing for Pediatric Patients

Great Ormond Street Hospital specializes in treating children with rare and complex medical conditions. Rapid laboratory testing can play an important role in diagnosis and treatment decisions.

“Children come to Great Ormond Street from all over the country, many of them with rare and complex conditions. For their families, the wait for a test result can be one of the hardest parts of being in hospital,” said Dr Tim Liversedge, Chief of Staff for Core Clinical Services and Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

“Our ambition with this partnership is to support our clinical teams to transport and test samples faster, helping us make the right decisions for our patients and their families as efficiently as possible.”

The drone service offers an alternative to ground couriers traveling through London’s busy streets. Faster transport allows laboratories to begin testing sooner, although overall turnaround times also depend on laboratory processing.

Building a Wider Healthcare Drone Network

The new route adds to Matternet and Apian’s existing medical drone delivery operations in London.

Apian, founded by NHS doctors, develops logistics systems that connect hospitals, laboratories, and pharmacies. Its platform combines autonomous drones, ground robotics, and software to manage medical deliveries.

According to the companies, the existing NHS network has transported thousands of patient samples. Apian also reports lower costs and carbon emissions compared with traditional ground courier services.

Matternet holds operational approvals from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for its NHS drone delivery network in London. The company reports more than 60,000 commercial flights across its operations in the United States, Europe, and the UK.

The expansion shows how medical drone delivery is moving beyond individual routes toward networks connecting multiple healthcare facilities.

Matternet Prepares Next-Generation Delivery Platform

The hospital expansion follows Matternet’s September announcement of its M3 autonomous drone delivery platform.

NHS drone delivery

The M3 system aims to support higher-volume deliveries through compact facilities that can operate without on-site drone operators. It includes an aircraft, an automated charging dock, and a portal for depositing packages.

Matternet designed the M3 aircraft to carry up to 11 pounds within a 10-mile service radius. The company is targeting the second half of 2027 for commercial operations, with Apian among its initial launch partners.

Matternet has not identified M3 as the aircraft serving Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The latest NHS expansion demonstrates the growing role of drones in routine medical logistics. As these networks develop, their ability to deliver measurable improvements in speed, cost, and reliability will help determine their wider adoption.
