Defence plan reflects growing allied focus on trusted supply chains and domestic drone manufacturing
The UK government will invest more than £5 billion in drones and autonomous systems over the remainder of the current Parliament, making one of the largest national commitments to uncrewed technology by a Western ally.
The investment is part of the government’s new Defence Investment Plan, which goes beyond purchasing aircraft. It funds manufacturing, testing infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and new organizations designed to speed the development and deployment of uncrewed systems.
The strategy reflects a broader shift among allied nations. As drones become central to modern defence, governments are placing greater emphasis on domestic manufacturing and trusted supply chains to reduce dependence on overseas suppliers for critical technologies.
Building a Sovereign Drone Capability
The plan supports uncrewed systems across all branches of the UK’s armed forces.
Funding includes autonomous aircraft for the Royal Air Force, uncrewed surface and underwater vessels for the Royal Navy, and expanded drone capabilities for the British Army. The government will also establish a new Uncrewed Systems Taskforce to accelerate collaboration with industry and fund the Uncrewed Systems Centre in Swindon, described as Europe’s largest drone testing facility.
Announcing the plan, then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “We are backing this by putting more than £5 billion into drones and autonomous weapons, the largest ever UK investment in this technology.”
The Defence Investment Plan also includes funding for AI-enabled targeting, collaborative combat aircraft, autonomous maritime systems, and counter-drone capabilities.
A Growing International Trend
The UK’s “Backing British” strategy mirrors, in some respects, initiatives underway in the United States and other allied nations, where governments are increasingly treating drones as strategic infrastructure rather than commercial products alone.
In the U.S., policies including the FCC Covered List, Blue UAS initiatives, and incentives for domestic production all reflect a growing emphasis on secure supply chains and sovereign manufacturing capacity. Similar efforts are emerging across Europe as governments apply lessons from Ukraine and seek to expand domestic production of critical defence technologies.
Rather than focusing on a single platform, the UK is investing across the entire uncrewed ecosystem, from research and manufacturing to testing and operational deployment.
For drone manufacturers, software developers, and autonomy companies, the announcement signals continued demand for technologies that can be produced, integrated, and fielded quickly as governments reshape their defence industrial base.
