Geo Week to Relocate to Salt Lake City in 2027

February 19, 2026 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

Leading Geospatial Event Moves to Utah’s Expanding Technology Hub

Geo Week will relocate to Salt Lake City, Utah in 2027, according to an announcement issued this week. The move shifts the event from Denver, Colorado to one of the fastest-growing technology markets in the United States.

Organizers say the relocation reflects the strength of Utah’s geospatial ecosystem and its growing community of mapping professionals. Geo Week is widely recognized as a major North American event focused on geospatial and mapping technologies.

Why Salt Lake City?

Event leaders pointed to Salt Lake City’s established geospatial infrastructure and technology workforce.

“We’re eager to host Geo Week in Salt Lake City and expand our industry partnerships,” said Lee Corkhill, Event Director for Geo Week. “The city puts our industry’s work on display— from maintaining sophisticated GIS operations covering water systems, utilities, transportation infrastructure, and public lands, to lidar acquisition and open data initiatives—making Salt Lake City an ideal location for showcasing geospatial technology in action.”

Salt Lake City ranks third among large U.S. metro areas for overall economic performance. The technology sector plays a major role in that growth. It accounts for 8.5 percent of the city’s workforce and generates a $13 billion economic impact.

Thousands of geospatial professionals work across Utah’s public agencies, utility companies, and private firms. The region supports an active network of professional associations, user groups, and government programs. Together, they create a collaborative environment for advancing geospatial science and technology.

City and county agencies operate advanced GIS systems. These systems manage water networks, utilities, stormwater, transportation infrastructure, and public lands. The state also supports lidar acquisition across the region. Open data programs provide public access to large spatial datasets. Organizers say this real-world activity makes Salt Lake City a strong setting for a geospatial conference.

Education and Workforce Development

Utah’s higher education system also played a role in the decision.

Several universities in the state offer geospatial programs. These institutions help create a steady pipeline of skilled professionals entering the workforce. Salt Lake City has one of the highest concentrations of young professionals in North America. The city also ranks highly for growth in college-educated residents.

University research laboratories support geospatial projects and spatial analysis. They often work with regional user groups and professional associations. This structure helps students build technical skills while gaining industry connections.

Organizers say the academic and professional network aligns well with Geo Week’s focus on workforce development and career growth.

Continuing the Mission

Geo Week 2027 will continue the event’s core mission. The conference brings together professionals to explore how data, maps, and advanced technologies support data-driven solutions.

Salt Lake City’s geography also offers practical examples. The region sits at the intersection of alpine mountains, desert environments, and the Great Salt Lake. These varied landscapes provide case studies for mapping, surveying, and spatial analysis applications.

Geo Week 2027 will take place February 23 to 25, 2027 at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City. Event organizers have opened early communications for updates and partnership discussions.
