UK MOD Selects Seven Partners for Project NYX Apache Wingman Drone Project

January 29, 2026 by staff Leave a Comment

The UK Ministry of Defence has invited seven industry partners to advance designs for autonomous drones designed to operate alongside Apache attack helicopters under Project NYX, marking significant progress toward a new operational concept for British military aviation.

The loyal wingman drones will perform complex tasks including reconnaissance, surveillance in contested areas, target acquisition, strike operations, and electronic warfare—all while maintaining autonomy on the battlefield. This represents a fundamental shift in how crewed and uncrewed aircraft will function together in future conflicts.

How Loyal Wingman Drones Will Function

The selected companies—Anduril Industries (UK) Ltd, BAE Systems Operations Ltd, Leonardo MW Ltd, Lockheed Martin UK Ltd, Syos Aerospace UK Ltd, Tekever Ltd, and Thales UK Ltd—must design systems capable of operating on a “command rather than control” principle. Rather than requiring continuous remote piloting, Apache crews will issue high-level mission objectives, with the drones making independent tactical decisions within defined parameters using artificial intelligence.

This autonomous operational model enhances lethality, survivability, and mission effectiveness while reducing risk and logistical burden for human-operated systems. The drones will function as force multipliers, extending the Apache’s operational reach while keeping human pilots safer.

Strategic Defence Review Integration

Project NYX delivers on commitments outlined in the UK Strategic Defence Review, which emphasises using uncrewed and autonomous capabilities to generate mass and lethality on contested battlefields. The programme capitalises on the integration of drones, AI, and autonomy alongside traditional military assets including tanks and artillery, fundamentally reshaping Britain’s military approach.

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard MP stated: “These drones of the future will make the British Army more effective and lethal by enhancing our ability to strike, survive and win on the battlefield. Project NYX represents the cutting edge of the Defence Industrial Strategy, working with leading British industry partners to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of autonomous military technology.”

SYOS Aerospace CEO and founder Sam Vye said, “We are thrilled to advance to the next stage of Project NYX, which is an innovative approach by the Ministry of Defence to work with industry partners to develop Uncrewed Air Systems (UAS) to operate alongside Apache attack helicopters.  It’s great recognition of a young British company leading the way in autonomous uncrewed vehicles – we’re proud to be advancing with some of the global defence primes. The project’s purpose aligns with why SYOS exists and how we work – to partner with customers and end users to build real-world autonomy that solves hard operational challenges and pushes the edge of technology innovation.”

Timeline and Next Steps

The pre-qualification phase concluded in late 2025. By March 2026, the competition will narrow to four suppliers who will receive research and development contracts to produce concept demonstrators. Initial operational capability is targeted for 2030, positioning Britain’s military to field these autonomous systems within the next four years.
