Switzerland-based meteorology data company Meteomatics has announced a partnership with NOAA’s National Mesonet Program (NMP) to integrate operational weather drone data into National Weather Service forecasts—marking the first time drone-collected observations will feed directly into U.S. weather forecasting operations.
Meteodrones Fill Critical Data Gaps
The Meteodrones will collect atmospheric measurements between 50 and 20,000 feet above ground, an altitude range where the national observing system is thinnest. These autonomous aircraft will provide vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, and wind, capturing data in the lower atmosphere where “some of the most impactful weather develops,” according to the announcement.
By deploying weather drones equipped with high-resolution sensing capabilities, the partnership aims to provide “frequent measurements” that improve forecast accuracy. This data addresses gaps in the lower atmosphere—the region where thunderstorm formation, fog development, winter precipitation type, air quality dispersal, and low-level wind events originate. According to Meteomatics CEO Martin Fengler, “Our Meteodrones were designed for exactly this purpose, strengthening forecasts with previously inaccessible data to prepare and protect nations.”
Pilot Program and Operational Structure
The initial pilot runs from February through April 2026, with weather drones conducting routine flights from a remotely operated Meteobase in Oklahoma. This remote operations center approach allows pilots to manage drone operations across multiple sites from a centralized location, increasing operational efficiency and flexibility.
The integration process involves collaboration among three key partners: Meteomatics (providing the drone platform and data), Synoptic Data PBC (lead subcontractor managing data delivery), and KBR (NMP Prime Contractor). Synoptic Data’s role emphasizes high-quality, low-latency connectivity to support NWS operations, while KBR coordinates meteorological observation data from non-federal networks across all 50 states.
