Fractal Antenna Systems Announces Acoustic C-UAS Tool

December 8, 2025 by Ian McNabb Leave a Comment

Fractal Antenna Systems, Inc. has announced JERECHO™, an acoustic array platform designed for counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) applications. The system, developed through the company’s OWL WORKS™ special projects division, uses directed sound technology for detection, disruption, and related defense functions.

Technical Specifications of Acoustic Electronic Warfare

JERECHO™ incorporates Fractal’s Acoustic Resonance Mitigation (ARM) framework, originally patented in 2015 and expanded with additional patent-pending technology. The platform utilizes a sound-based array that focuses on how acoustic waves interact with their medium, enabling operators to direct and control sound propagation. The system employs fractal-based techniques to shape acoustic arrays and increase operational range.

The platform features wideband sonification capabilities alongside detection and imaging functions. According to the press release, these elements work together within the broader acoustic electronic warfare framework—the company’s term for directed sound technology applications in defense contexts.

Demonstrated Capabilities and Testing

Testing has shown measurable effects on electronic systems. Precisely calibrated ultrasonic signals have disrupted smartphone navigation systems in controlled conditions. Small unmanned aircraft exhibited camera image degradation when exposed to acoustic vibrations during testing. FRACTAL CEO Nathan Cohen stated these results represent reproducible effects rather than isolated incidents.

The company positions JERECHO™ as a testbed for medium-range counter-drone applications within layered defense architectures. The platform addresses detection, disruption, electronic spoofing, laser integration, and controlled-flight experimentation capabilities.

Technology Development and Industry Context

Fractal’s approach to acoustic electronic warfare—defined by the company as “novel ways of directing and controlling sound and medium”—represents an evolution of technology the company originally developed. The firm received the 2025 Gold Military & Aerospace Innovation Award for acoustic counter-UAS research, though the company notes that early ARM technology development faced domestic skepticism before gaining international attention.

Cohen stated: “Sound waves have long had their place in defense, but we now see a new era emerging—’acoustic electronic warfare’—defined by novel ways of directing and controlling sound and medium, and thwarting devices that are surprisingly sensitive to sound interaction.”

Broader Applications

Beyond counter-drone functions, Fractal describes JERECHO™ as applicable against multiple device categories. The company lists potential targets including drones, robots, smartphones, electronic systems, vessels, and unidentified aerial objects. Cohen noted that “sound can be potent against modern machine surrogates such as drones, robots, smartphones, electronics, vessels, and aerial objects of unknown origin.”

Fractal has developed technology across multiple sectors over three decades, including antenna systems, metamaterials, and advanced materials research. The company positions JERECHO™ as the operational application of previously developed acoustic technology.

More information about Fractal is available from their website.
