Event planners say drone shows are emerging as a popular option for communities seeking cleaner, quieter, and more modern ways to mark major holidays. This New Year’s Eve, Allentown, Pennsylvania, will debut its first drone light show, using a synchronized fleet of 200 illuminated drones to ring in 2026 instead of traditional fireworks. Officials describe the event as part of a broader move toward eco-friendly, crowd-pleasing celebrations that do not rely on explosives, loud booms, or smoke-filled skies.
Event Display says this trend reflects a reimagining of how communities gather and celebrate, as organizers weigh drone shows alongside more conventional nighttime displays. Rather than arguing that drones replace fireworks altogether, the company highlights that cities now have an alternative they can choose when noise, air quality, or safety are key concerns.
According to their release, several factors are driving interest in drone shows. Fireworks can reach 150–170 decibels, which may cause anxiety for children, pets, veterans, and neurodiverse individuals, while drone shows create a gentler ambient hum. Traditional fireworks also release chemical particulates, debris, and metal compounds, whereas drones produce no smoke and leave no physical waste. Because each drone functions as a moving “pixel,” fleets can animate logos, holiday messages, characters, or narrative sequences, supporting more precise storytelling and branding than fixed pyrotechnic shells. Organizers can also reduce fire risk by choosing a format that does not rely on sparks or fallout.
Event Display reports that clients increasingly ask how drones can elevate festivals, corporate events, and holiday spectaculars. “Swapping fireworks for choreographed drones is the hot trend in events, and it’s incredible to watch. You get all the wow-factor without the smoke and noise. We’ve started designing drone show elements for clients because everyone is asking for that ‘next-level’ experience. It’s the future of night-sky entertainment, and frankly, it’s a blast…with no actual blasts,” says Event Display and Trade Show Expert Richard Perry from Event Display.
