Collaboration aims to establish Korean production base and advance autonomous aerial defense systems in the region
Korean Air has signed a new technical agreement with U.S. defense technology company Anduril Industries to co-develop unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for the Asia-Pacific market. The partnership combines Korean Air’s integrated UAV system expertise with Anduril’s advanced AI and autonomous mission technologies.
The agreement was formalized at a ceremony on August 7 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul. It builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in April and marks a move from initial discussions to concrete business planning.
Plans for AI-Driven UAV Development
Under the agreement, Korean Air and Anduril will develop a “Korean-style” UAV model featuring AI-powered autonomous mission capabilities. The plan includes licensed production of Anduril’s drones and AI surveillance systems in Korea, with rights to export across the Asia-Pacific region.
The companies are also reviewing the establishment of a local production hub, tentatively named Arsenal South Korea. The facility would be central to supplying UAVs for regional defense markets.
A Korean Air spokesperson stated, “As the defense industry shifts toward AI-centric systems, this collaboration goes beyond co-development—it has the potential to reshape the global UAV market and enhance the operational efficiency of our military’s unmanned forces.”
Anduril’s Role in the Global Defense Sector
Founded in 2017, Anduril Industries has drawn significant global attention for its rapid rise in the defense market. The company provides AI-powered unmanned systems, real-time data analytics, and integrated command-and-control solutions to the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Navy, and the Australian Ministry of Defence.
Anduril’s technologies are designed to enable autonomous operation in complex defense environments, positioning the company as a leading developer of AI-driven military systems. Its systems have been deployed for applications ranging from border security to advanced naval operations.
Expanding Defense Collaboration in Korea
The announcement coincided with Anduril’s launch event for its new Korean branch, co-hosted by the U.S. Commercial Service and the U.S. Embassy in Seoul. At the event, Anduril also signed agreements with other major Korean defense companies.
This move follows Anduril’s August 6 signing of a memorandum of agreement with HD Hyundai to jointly develop autonomous AI naval systems, expanding the company’s Korean partnerships into the maritime sector.
Looking Ahead
With a final contract expected early next year, Korean Air and Anduril’s collaboration underscores Korea’s ambition to play a leading role in AI-enabled defense systems. As AI becomes central to modern defense strategies, this partnership could position Korea as a key player in unmanned aerial capabilities across the Asia-Pacific region.
