New Next-Generation Battery Technology Doubles Drone Flight Time

Breakthrough innovation offers longer flights and reliable performance in extreme climates

As the U.S. government prioritizes supply chain resilience and reduces reliance on Chinese manufacturing, companies like BEI are contributing cutting-edge innovations to meet these goals. Founded in South Korea and now with offices in the United States, BEI is driving advancements that promise to transform drone operations, enabling significantly extended flight times and reliable performance under extreme conditions.

BEI has developed a battery with an unprecedented energy density of 410 Wh/kg. This advancement allows drones to achieve double the flight time and cover up to 70% longer distances compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Exceptional Performance in Extreme Climates

One of the standout features of BEI’s technology is its reliability in harsh environments. “This is a game-changer for the drone industry,” says Jaehee Sweeney, Chief Business Development Officer at BEI. “Our battery technology not only extends flight time significantly but also unlocks operational capabilities in extreme climates that were previously impossible. This opens up a world of possibilities for applications in defense, surveillance, delivery, and more.”

In independent tests conducted throughout 2024, BEI’s battery enabled a drone to fly for 40 minutes at -20°C. Under the same conditions, a standard lithium-ion battery lasted only 10 seconds. This capacity for extreme performance makes BEI’s technology particularly valuable for industries such as defense, infrastructure inspection, and emergency response.

Enhanced Versatility and Efficiency

Beyond longer flight times, BEI’s battery offers other critical benefits. Its high energy density allows drones to carry heavier payloads, making it suitable for tasks such as mapping, aerial photography, and package delivery. Additionally, the battery’s long lifespan and fast recharging capabilities reduce operational downtime, enhancing efficiency for commercial and industrial users.

BEI’s innovation arrives at a pivotal moment as supply chain vulnerabilities and geopolitical risks reshape manufacturing strategies. While many battery technologies rely on production concentrated in specific regions, BEI’s South Korean origins provide a secure and reliable supply chain.
