Drone Show Association Formed to Develop Industry Standards and Safety

January 13, 2025 by Miriam McNabb 1 Comment

New Organization Aims to Enhance Drone Show Safety Following Orlando Incident

Stakeholders have formed the International Drone Show Industry Association (IDSIA) to promote safety and quality standards for drone shows worldwide. This development comes in the wake of a recent accident at a drone show in Orlando, Florida, which injured a young spectator.  Investigation into this incident is ongoing.

Objectives of the Association

The IDSIA has outlined several key objectives:

1. Protect the industry by uniting resources
2. Support drone show providers and professionals
3. Develop legislation for drone fleet operations
4. Educate drone show specialists
5. Raise public awareness about the drone show industry
6. Gather and share expertise on drone show technology
7. Conduct research to improve industry practices

These goals aim to address safety concerns and promote responsible growth in the drone show sector.

Membership and Structure

The association is open to both individuals and companies involved in the drone show industry. Interested parties can apply for membership through the IDSIA website. The organization’s board reviews applications within four weeks.

Members pay an annual fee of 100 Euros and must agree to follow the association’s charter. This structure ensures that all members are committed to upholding industry standards.

Association Activities

The IDSIA plans to engage in a wide range of activities to achieve its goals. The association will prepare proposals to improve laws and regulations related to drone shows. It will also organize discussions on industry challenges to foster collaboration and problem-solving.

Cooperation with other organizations and institutions is another key focus. The IDSIA aims to support educational and research initiatives to advance the field. To share knowledge and best practices, the association will host conferences, seminars, and lectures.Working groups will be formed to address specific issues within the industry. These groups will bring together experts to tackle challenges and develop solutions.

The IDSIA also plans to publish informative materials to educate both industry professionals and the public. These efforts will help create a more robust and safe drone show industry. By addressing various aspects of the field, the association aims to promote growth while prioritizing safety.

Impact on the Industry

The formation of the IDSIA is a significant step for the drone show industry. It provides a framework for addressing safety concerns and developing best practices. This is particularly important in light of recent incidents like the Orlando accident.

By working together, industry professionals can improve safety standards and build public trust in drone shows. The association’s efforts may also help prevent future accidents and ensure the continued growth of this exciting entertainment medium.

I was excited to stumble upon this piece of news, then immediately disheartened when I took a closer look at the legitimacy of IDSIA and its purpose.

The links you’ve provided to their website do not load, but typing in droneshowassociation.org (or googling International Drone Show Industry Association) redirects to droneshowsoftware.com, aka the company that developed the Drone Show Software. On their IDSIA webpage, it states “*Community membership is exclusively available to the users of the Drone Show Software.” Also on the website is the claim “The largest and most experienced community of drone show specialists.” but in reality it is limited to only users of their software product.

Based on their blog content, this company is a close partner of UVify (developers of the drones used in the Orlando drone show accident) as well as Sky Elements (the company that flew the show.)

Seems IDSIA is less of an association genuinely geared towards the improvement of drone show system safety for all industry players, but instead a marketing campaign to both promote the use of this company’s software and an attempt to reframe themselves and their partners in a better light following the aftermath of the accident in Orlando.

Miriam – I would love to share with you a white paper currently in development that actually addresses drone show safety concerns and actionable components of a drone show system that are necessary to ensure safety. Unlike the info/discussions IDSIA promises, this paper will not be gated. Let me know if you are interested.
