Serve Robotics and Wing Join Forces for Robot-Drone Delivery Cooperation

October 1, 2024 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

Partnership Aims to Extend Delivery Radius and Increase Efficiency

Serve Robotics Inc. and Wing Aviation LLC have announced a partnership that aims to expand the reach and efficiency of autonomous food deliveries. The collaboration will allow Serve’s autonomous sidewalk robots and Wing’s drones to work together, offering a faster, more cost-effective, and environmentally friendly delivery solution.

Robot-drone delivery cooperation

This pilot program introduces a combined robot-to-drone delivery system that will extend the delivery area for restaurants and other merchants. Serve’s robots will collect orders curbside and transport them to a Wing AutoLoader located nearby. From there, a Wing drone will take over, flying the order to customers up to six miles away.

Enhancing Last-Mile Delivery

This partnership leverages both companies’ technologies to create a streamlined delivery process. Serve’s AI-powered robots are designed for pick-up in dense urban environments, while Wing’s drones extend the range of these deliveries. Together, they aim to make deliveries faster, safer, and more reliable.

According to Dr. Ali Kashani, CEO and co-founder of Serve Robotics, the collaboration will significantly enhance delivery capacity. “We’re excited to partner with Wing to offer a multi-modal delivery experience that expands our market from roughly half of all food deliveries that are within 2 miles of a restaurant, to offering 30 minute autonomous delivery across an entire city,” said Dr. Kashani. He added that this solution will become “the most efficient mode for the significant majority of deliveries.”

Wing’s CEO, Adam Woodworth, echoed this sentiment. “At Wing, we have been delivering food and other goods directly to consumers for over five years, completing more than 400,000 commercial deliveries across three continents. We have a proven ability to make deliveries quickly and efficiently,” Woodworth explained. He emphasized that the partnership will help both companies serve more merchants in congested areas while expanding delivery services.

Benefits for Merchants and Customers

The robot-to-drone delivery system offers multiple benefits to both merchants and consumers. One of the most significant advantages is speed—Wing’s drones fly above traffic, while Serve’s robots navigate sidewalks, avoiding street congestion altogether. This method provides faster delivery without the delays caused by traffic jams.

Additionally, the partnership aims to lower delivery costs for both operators and consumers. The fully electric robots and drones reduce emissions and congestion, supporting eco-friendly business practices. “Both fully-electric, Wing and Serve reduce vehicle emissions associated with food delivery, as well as reducing traffic and congestion,” stated the press release.

The delivery system is also designed to be convenient for merchants, requiring no changes to their facilities. Serve’s robots handle curbside pickups, meaning that restaurants and other vendors can offer drone delivery without investing in new infrastructure.

A Sustainable Future for Delivery

As both Serve and Wing look to the future, this pilot program represents a major step forward in automating last-mile delivery. With a shared commitment to sustainability, cost-efficiency, and safety, this partnership could reshape how goods are delivered across cities. The collaboration between robot and drone delivery has the potential to reduce traffic accidents, cut costs, and decrease environmental impacts associated with traditional delivery methods.
