AUVSI and DIU Sign MOU on Drone Cybersecurity

April 23, 2024 by Miriam McNabb 2 Comments

The memorandum aims to integrate certified drone components into the Blue UAS Framework list.

Skyfront gas electric hybrid drones geoweekThe Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) announced a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the XPONENTIAL 2024 conference. The agreement sets a framework for drone component manufacturers holding Green UAS certification to share their data directly with DIU. The goal is to streamline the inclusion of these certified components into DIU’s Blue UAS Framework list, which is used to review cybersecurity and supply chain certifications.  The MOU addresses concerns that the Blue UAS list is too limited in scope, making it difficult for otherwise qualified US-based manufacturers to access government customers.

Derek McBride, Deputy Director of DIU’s Autonomy Portfolio, commented on the objectives of the MOU: “The intent behind this effort is to increase availability of NDAA verified UAS components to the uncrewed industry at large and streamline the process for Blue UAS consideration,” he said. “Providing better options for our warfighters and our national security is paramount.”

Casie Ocaña, Director of Trusted Programs at AUVSI, also noted the purpose of the agreement. “This collaboration marks a significant stride in advancing the integration of UAS into defense applications, which will further our shared goal of supporting a strong and secure commercial drone industrial base,” she remarked.

Key aspects of the MOU include:

  • Enhanced Access and Availability: The agreement aims to provide easier access to cybersecurity testing for UAS companies, which will simplify the procedures for systems to be added to DIU’s Blue UAS list.
  • Addressing Market Demands: The collaboration not only focuses on Department of Defense usage but also aims to address the needs of the civil and commercial sectors by offering additional component options.
  • Alignment with NDAA Compliance: The Green UAS certification process aligns with the stringent National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) compliance and cybersecurity verification procedures of DIU’s Blue UAS list.

This partnership, which formally started in September 2022, builds on the launch of the Green UAS certification by AUVSI in February 2023. The MOU reflects ongoing efforts to coordinate more closely in integrating certified drone components within both government and commercial applications.
