As drones become increasingly integrated into the fabric of business, drone insurance is also a growing sector. Many industries require commercial pilots to purchase insurance before flying – other pilots insure in order to protect their fleet and sensors.
Insurance for commercial drone flights is relatively new, however: so we wanted to know how many commercial operators are actually using it. In this DRONELIFE minute survey we asked on simple question: “Do you purchase drone insurance for your commercial drone flights?” Answers, as always, are anonymous.
There are a lot of very significant drone business surveys, and a lot of very official forecasts for the drone industry. The DRONELIFE Minute Survey makes no claim to be either – it’s a way for DRONELIFE to share some of the prevailing buzz that comes our way from readers on a variety of subjects, and for us to track changes over time on topics that we feel would be of interest to our readers and the industry. Recent surveys included pricing in the commercial drone space and the effect of the coronavirus on business at a point in time.
Here was our DRONELIFE Minute Survey question: “Do you purchase drone insurance for your commercial drone flights? Answers are anonymous.”

InsurTech companies can celebrate: more than 50% of commercial drone operators surveyed said that they always purchase insurance – and another 26% said that they do sometimes. With more than three quarters of the commercial operators surveyed participating in the insurance market, it’s definitely a growing sector. InsurTech providers like DroneInsurance.com and SkyWatch.ai have worked to make drone insurance more flexible and affordable than traditional types of insurance.
