June is shaping up to take high flight for Japanese drone provider Terra Drone Corporation.
Yesterday, the company’s European office announced an agreement to provide UAV services to the UK’s national mapping agency, Ordnance Survey. The contract includes services from orthomosaics to digital terrain models (DTM) and digital surface models.
Terra Drone Europe plans to survey more than 500 locations using fixed-wing and multi-rotor drones.
Earlier this week, Terra Drone demonstrated an unmanned traffic management (UTM) system developed jointly with drone traffic management firm Unifly.
The test took place at Japan’s Fukushima Robot Test Field before more than a dozen officials from Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of the Interior, Industrial Technology Research Institute, National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, and Taiwan Association of Information and Communication Standards.
A company press release notes:
“The demonstration showcased how real-time tracking and controlling of multiple drones could help to bridge the gap between manned and unmanned airspace and ensure safe drone operations for all…As industrial drone solutions gather steam in the Asia-Pacific region, many countries are quickly realizing the importance of having a robust UTM system in place. Taiwan also understands that poorly-handled drone operations can lead to severe economic losses.”
The two announcements showcase Terra Drone’s increasing global presence in the drone industry.

- May: Established Terra Drone Angola after receiving multiple contracts from major oil and gas companies in West Africa.
- February: Entered the “relatively unexplored territory of the Indian Industrial UAV market” with Terra Drone India. “The market is brimming with potential: we’ll help industries streamline their workflows with Terra Drone’s latest state-of the art UAV technology backed with strong artificial intelligence,” said Prateek Srivastava, CEO of Terra Drone India.
- January: Created a partnership with Sibanye-Stillwater, the largest producer of gold in South Africa, to provide inspection drone services.
- December: Bought a major stake in Australian data firm C4D Intel.
- October: Joined forces with Unifly to create a drone traffic management system for Hitachi.
- 2017: Launched new image processing software – Terra Mapper – to optimize drone surveying services. The platform is an automated drone navigation, image processing, and 3D image analysis program that is available in both cloud and desktop versions.
