California-based 3D Robotics (3DR) has lowered the price of its Solo drone along with several accessories. The Solo is now available down $200 from $999.95 to $799.95, with the Solo gimbal also reduced down to under $200.
Since the Solo launched, the drone has been sold in over 2000 retail locations worldwide and the company has expanded production to 22 different countries. 3DR claim that this expansion and growth has led to large savings, which can now be passed on to customers as they look to gain ground early in 2016.
Our very own Andrew Amato spent some time over the holidays with a 3DR Solo. I think it’s safe to say that he was impressed, despite the obvious flaw of 3DR’s flagship drone. The Solo doesn’t come with its own camera, and has instead been designed to work seamlessly with a GoPro. While this is fine for people who already own a GoPro and will enjoy switching it between drone, helmet and (if you have to) stick, it’s an additional expense that doesn’t come with 3DR’s competitors.
Because of this it’s a smart move to lower prices and appeal to as many potential pilots as possible. This is especially the case as we head into a year when GoPro itself will be releasing the company’s first drone, the Karma. GoPro’s first drone has been so far shrouded in mystery, but videos suggest it may have one or two interesting features. On top of that, new releases from DJI and Parrot are ready to crowd the market with even more worthy competitors.

That really sucks for the loyal solo owners who purchased it for the full price. 3dr should make they’re own camera’s that can that can be fitted on the solo. 3dr should also make their own foldable drone since the mavic and karma seem to be hot sellers. Let’s go 3DR!
