Drones are constantly in the news these days. Whether it be making an appearance in baseball stadiums or even the White House lawn, drones are becoming increasingly popular. However, while we get to hear a lot of not-so-important stories about drone usage, these airborne vehicles may be put to a considerably more useful application in the near future.
Take the highly popular Meals on Wheels program that delivers food with a smile to more than a third of senior citizens in the United States on a daily basis. While it is a truly noble cause, the amount of volunteers helping the cause is dwindling over time. This poses a real threat to the program itself because if there are no people to deliver the meals, then thousands of elderly people may go hungry.
This is where the use of drones can come in handy. While there is no replacement for human touch, we can certainly make better use of our time by cutting out tasks such grocery shopping or meal delivery and instead, allow humans to spend that time with each other. Drones can do menial jobs, whereas humans can play the more important role of interacting with the elderly.
Don’t take our word for it though. A recent Gallup poll indicated that family caregivers allot up to 13 days each month on running errands or doing grocery. If these errands or groceries were to be done by a drone, not only does it free up more of the person’s time, but it can also be better for the environment in terms of saving gas, emissions, and general traffic count.
So maybe it’s time for us to think of an alternative and more streamlined solution to make our time really count. The use of drones can allow us to do more important things such as spending time with loved ones.
