Here’s an interesting question: At what point do marketing stunts involving drones actually hinder the potential benefits of UAV technology? We’ve recently seen that drone delivery can genuinely save lives. Do the public and regulatory bodies take the technology less seriously when it’s applied for trivial purposes?
That’s probably a philosophical discussion for another time. On an entirely separate note, let’s take a closer look at the latest application for drone delivery…
Yes. This is the Wienerdrone, just one element of Oscar Mayor’s hotdog delivering Wieinerfleet. The idea is to drop hotdogs on sports fans from above, we think. Hopefully they can catch.
Drone hotdog delivery might seem pretty farfetched. But it’s not the first time companies have looked to employ drone technology for marketing purposes. Remember Nivea’s drone designed to poop sunscreen on your kids? Or how about Dominoes’ drone delivery trial?
Given the current FAA regulations, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the wienerdrone at a sporting event near you anytime soon. Drones aren’t permitted to fly over crowds of people, even if they are raining down meaty goodness from above.
Below are the ‘specs’ of the hotdog delivery drone, just in case you wanted to know…
So who will really benefit from a drone delivery system unable to drop hotdogs on the masses? Maybe there’s a really unpopular baseball team out there, with a single hungry fan?
We’re still waiting for confirmation from Oscar Mayor on whether or not condiment drones will be accompanying their drone hotdog delivery service. What’s a dog without mustard and ketchup, anyway?
They clearly haven’t thought this through.
