Hitachi Develops Wind-Resistant Drone Modeling Technology to Revolutionize Air Mobility Operations

Hitachi, Ltd. has developed breakthrough modeling technology that enables drones to navigate sudden weather changes including gusts and strong winds, addressing a critical barrier to expanding drone operations across infrastructure inspection and logistics sectors. The innovation measures wind resistance performance for individual aircraft and creates digital models of aircraft response, allowing operators to verify flight behavior with high precision in virtual environments before deployment.​

Addressing Critical Infrastructure Needs

Japan faces mounting challenges in maintaining social infrastructure amid logistics growth and workforce shortages in facility maintenance. Small drones offer solutions for infrastructure inspection and disaster response, yet their susceptibility to strong winds has created significant operational limitations. Traditional operation management technologies struggle in urban areas with dense building clusters and mountainous regions where wind patterns change unpredictably. Hitachi’s modeling approach integrates into its Digital Road mobility control platform, developed to digitize environmental information including weather and communications conditions for comprehensive risk management.​

Technical Innovation Through Wind Tunnel Testing

Hitachi’s development team conducts wind tunnel experiments combined with motion capture measurement data to measure aircraft movement and attitude changes under repetitive gust conditions. The process generates response models through aerodynamic analysis considering wind force, lift, and gravity. These models simulate meteorological conditions along flight routes, enabling advance safety verification with approximately 90% accuracy for aircraft position variation under repetitive gusts.​

The real-world testing approach accommodates various aircraft types and payload configurations, contributing to flight route selection and operational efficiency optimization across diverse use cases.​

Integration and Future Applications

Hitachi has integrated the modeling technology into Digital Road, its mobility control platform that determines environmental changes along routes in real time and calculates safe movement paths. The enhanced platform combines weather forecasting, flight characteristics prediction, and aircraft-specific wind response modeling to enable operations in previously inaccessible environments including urban corridors and mountainous terrain.​

Applications extend across critical infrastructure including dams, water facilities, rivers, levees, bridges, power transmission lines, railways, and highways. By enabling reliable drone operations in challenging weather conditions, the technology addresses workforce shortages in infrastructure inspection while supporting Japan’s path toward carbon neutrality through renewable energy facility maintenance.​

Hitachi presented technical details at the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers 2025 Annual Conference held September 7-10, marking a milestone in advancing safe and efficient air mobility operations.
