Wing Partners with DoorDash for Drone-Delivered Wendy’s Meals in the U.S.
In another leap forward for food delivery services, Wing is set to expand its drone delivery partnership with DoorDash into the United States, beginning with delivering Wendy’s® meals. This move comes after a successful year-long trial in Australia, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of delivery services.
The service will launch in Christiansburg, Virginia, a community that has been at the forefront of Wing’s U.S. commercial operations since 2019. Christiansburg holds the distinction of being the starting point for Wing’s U.S. ventures and continues to play a pivotal role in the advancement of drone delivery technology. The expansion into the U.S. signifies an important step in realizing Wing’s vision of drone delivery becoming the preferred method for shipping millions of small packages daily worldwide.
Ordering DoorDash by Drone
Initially, the service will be available from one Wendy’s restaurant in the area. Customers looking to enjoy their Wendy’s favorites will find an option for drone delivery within the DoorDash app, promising an innovative and efficient delivery experience.
Wing’s drones offer a swift delivery solution, capable of speeds around 65 mph. They provide a service where orders, including food and other small items, can be delivered in as little as 30 minutes — with the record fastest delivery clocking in at just under three minutes. The drones operate by hovering and gently lowering orders to customers’ doorsteps via a tether, ensuring that food remains warm, treats stay frozen, and everything is delicious upon arrival.
This drone delivery service not only emphasizes speed but also environmental sustainability. In a recent survey conducted by Wing involving 1,000 U.S. consumers, 46% expressed a desire for more environmentally friendly delivery options for single-item orders. Wing’s partnership with DoorDash aims to meet this demand by providing a sustainable alternative that complements larger, traditional deliveries made by Dashers.
Wing is proud to introduce drone delivery through DoorDash in the U.S., marking a first in the country. The company encourages residents of Christiansburg to try out the drone delivery service and share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #dronedelivery. According to a Wing blog post, this initiative is not just about speed but about enhancing customer satisfaction and reducing the environmental impact of delivery services.
