Terra Drone Signs DEFTECH for Malaysia Defense Hub and Begins C-UAS System for Critical Infrastructure

August 31, 2026 by staff 2 Comments

Two same-day announcements from Tokyo position Terra Drone across the ASEAN defense market and peacetime infrastructure protection, extending the company’s defense push from March 2026.

Terra Drone Corporation announced two defense-business moves on August 31, 2026. After entering the defense market in March 2026 with a U.S. subsidiary, the two new announcements extend that push into Southeast Asia and peacetime critical infrastructure protection.

DEFTECH deal opens ASEAN defense market

Terra Drone signed a strategic collaboration with DRB-HICOM Defence Technologies (DEFTECH), Malaysia’s flagship defense company. DEFTECH produces armored vehicles, military logistics vehicles, unmanned systems and MRO for the Malaysian Armed Forces. The company built the AV8 Gempita 8×8 armored vehicle for the Malaysian Army.

The partnership covers ISR drones for maritime, coastal and border surveillance. It also covers counter-UAS solutions, interceptor drones and integrated sensor, communications and ground control systems. Demonstrations for the Malaysian Armed Forces and post-deployment training round out the scope.

Terra Drone will treat Malaysia as its ASEAN regional hub. The company plans expansion to Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia. All three countries participate in Japan’s Official Security Assistance (OSA) program. OSA funding roughly quadrupled from fiscal 2023 to JPY 8 billion (about $53 million) in fiscal 2025. Malaysia received a JPY 3.1 billion (about $21 million) fiscal 2025 package. The package included a diving support vessel and ceasefire monitoring equipment.

Peacetime C-UAS for critical infrastructure

Terra Drone also began development of a counter-unmanned aircraft system for civilian critical infrastructure. Target sites include oil and gas facilities, power plants, transmission networks, airports, ports, telecommunications facilities and logistics hubs.

The system will detect, identify and track suspicious drones through fused radar, radio-frequency and electro-optical/infrared sensors. Command-and-control fuses data across sensors. Interceptor drones will use high-speed flight, autonomous navigation and AI target tracking. A layered defense pairs electronic disruption with kinetic interception. Airspace management draws on Terra Drone’s UTM expertise.

Civilian sites carry employees, residents, vehicles and third-party aircraft. Terra Drone will design the system for operational safety, reduced operator workload, integration with existing security systems and maintainability.

The company cites recent incidents outside declared conflict zones. Russian strikes on southern Ukrainian energy infrastructure shut down Moldova’s Vulcănești–Isaccea transmission line. In Romania, a maritime drone exploded near an oil storage facility at the Port of Constanța on the Black Sea. A second explosive-laden maritime drone was neutralized near the Neptun Deep offshore gas project. The European Commission published its Action Plan on Drone and Counter-Drone Security in February 2026 in response to those patterns.

The move by Terra Drone to collaborate with DEFTECH in enhancing Malaysia’s defense capabilities is a significant step forward for the region. Focusing on C-UAS systems for protecting critical infrastructure addresses an urgent need in today’s security landscape. This partnership could lead to innovative approaches to counter unmanned threats. I frequently check defense industry newsletters for the latest insights on such developments.

It’s interesting to see how Terra Drone is expanding its reach in the ASEAN defense market, especially with the partnership with DEFTECH. The focus on critical infrastructure protection with C-UAS systems could really enhance security measures in the region. I often rely on industry reports for insights into similar developments.
