Elistair Khronos Tethered Drone Joins France’s ORION 2026 Exercise

April 30, 2026 by staff 2 Comments

The automated DroneBox provides persistent aerial surveillance during NATO-style multi-domain operations involving 12,500 troops and 1,200 drones.

Elistair’s Khronos automated tethered drone is taking part in ORION 2026, France’s largest joint military exercise in decades. The French manufacturer announced its participation in Phase O4, which runs April 7 through April 30.

ORION 2026 mobilizes up to 12,500 military personnel from February through April. The exercise spans land, sea, air, space, cyber, and electromagnetic domains. More than 1,200 drones of all types are deployed across the scenario.

Khronos Tethered Drone Delivers Persistent ISR

The Khronos system provides continuous aerial surveillance from fixed or mobile platforms. It does not depend on GNSS, radio frequency infrastructure, or battery-limited free-flying aircraft.

That capability addresses one of modern conflict’s hardest problems. Forces need real-time situational awareness in contested and GNSS-denied environments.

Elistair already contributed to Phase O2 in February. The week of April 27 features offensive exploitation operations, river crossings, retaking of key positions, and live-fire exercises.

Multi-Domain, NATO-Aligned Scenario

ORION 2026 demonstrates France’s ability to plug fully into a NATO command structure for collective defense. The high-intensity scenario stresses interoperability across services and allies.

Khronos deploys from a transportable DroneBox in under two minutes. Earlier coverage from Dronelife noted the system can deliver continuous day and night imagery for up to 24 hours, making it a “pocket watchtower” for tactical units.

The tethered drone operates in GPS- and RF-denied conditions through a secured tether and advanced positioning system. Elistair targets armed forces, law enforcement, civil security agencies, and private security operators in over 70 countries. The company runs operations from France and North Carolina.

Tethered drones at an exercise sounds interesting. I wonder how they handle the challenges of outdoor events like this.
