UAVOS has announced successful flight testing of an advanced optoelectronic payload system integrated aboard the ApusNeo 18, a solar-powered high-altitude pseudo-satellite developed in partnership with Mira Aerospace. The stratospheric drone payload demonstrated impressive earth observation capabilities during recent test flights conducted from 15,000 meters altitude.
Stratospheric Drone Imaging Performance
The gyro-stabilized Payload Onboard Device captured 472 km of electro-optical imagery with a ground sampling distance of 69 cm per pixel during the test mission. The system also acquired infrared imagery at 480 cm per pixel resolution. Operating from stratospheric altitudes, the drone-mounted camera’s footprint covered 53.9 km², while its steerable design enabled access to any location within a 54.5 x 12.3 km area at any given time.
According to Aliaksei Stratsilatau, Founder and CEO of UAVOS, “The Payload Onboard Device (POD) has already been successfully tested for wildfire monitoring in Spain. When integrated with the HAPS ApusNeo 18, which is capable of surveying hundreds of kilometres in a single flight, the system delivers a comprehensive situational picture, improving operational efficiency, reducing costs, and increasing overall mission effectiveness.”
Technical Specifications for High-Altitude Operations
The POD weighs just 3.6 kg with a compact form factor measuring 845 mm in length, 128 mm in width, and 142 mm in height. The stratospheric drone payload features an onboard computer for real-time data processing and a UAVOS radio modem equipped with a 10 W amplifier, enabling high-throughput data transmission to ground control stations.
To maintain reliable performance in the extreme stratospheric environment, the system incorporates integrated heating and cooling systems that ensure optimal operating conditions for onboard sensors. The POD also includes a foldable, servo-driven antenna that can be stowed in a safe position when required. The mechanical design enables video and photo acquisition with roll stabilization of up to ±50 degrees, expanding operational flexibility for the high-altitude drone platform.
UAVOS develops and manufactures security and commercial unmanned aerial systems, including multi-role UAVs, proprietary autopilots, advanced communication systems, and UAV components. The company is actively involved in stratospheric research and development projects, having previously developed the HiDRON stratospheric glider for meteorological missions and the HAPS ApusDuo autonomous aircraft.
