Anduril Launches $500K Drone Racing AI Grand Prix

January 28, 2026 by staff Leave a Comment

Anduril Industries has announced the AI Grand Prix, a global autonomous drone racing competition designed to push the boundaries of unmanned systems autonomy software in real-world flight conditions. The competition invites university teams and independent engineers worldwide to compete for a $500,000 prize pool and employment opportunities at the defense technology company.

Conceived by Anduril founder Palmer Luckey, the competition emphasizes software innovation as the sole competitive differentiator. “This is an open challenge,” Luckey stated. “If you think you can build an autonomy stack that can out-fly the world’s best, show us.”

The competition will use fully autonomous drones manufactured by Neros Technologies, a U.S.-based small unmanned aerial systems producer. Critically, the format prohibits human pilots and hardware modifications, ensuring that competitive advantages derive entirely from autonomy software development rather than equipment advantages.

Competition Timeline and Format

The AI Grand Prix competition begins with a remote qualification phase in spring 2026, where teams globally will submit autonomy software to race in a virtual environment. This simulation-based initial round allows teams to refine their algorithms before advancing to physical testing. Top-performing teams will progress to in-person training and qualification phases, where they must adapt their autonomous drone systems from simulation to real-world flight conditions—a critical test of software robustness.

The championship race will take place in November 2026 in Columbus, Ohio, hosted by Anduril in partnership with JobsOhio. This venue selection builds on Anduril’s establishment of Arsenal-1, its hyperscale manufacturing facility in Central Ohio, positioning the state as a hub for advanced autonomy technology development.

The race series operates under the Drone Champions League (DCL), the professional drone racing organization whose AI vector module integrates into the competition platform.

Expansion and Career Pathway

The inaugural U.S. competition signals Anduril’s intent to expand the AI Grand Prix globally, with future seasons planned across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Beyond competitive prizes, the highest-scoring individual or team member receives direct access to Anduril’s hiring pipeline, bypassing standard recruiting processes to interview with hiring managers for relevant positions.

The competition represents a convergence of autonomous drone development and competitive racing, creating a proving ground for autonomy software under demanding operational conditions.

More information is available from the project’s website.
