MatrixSpace Secures $20M in Series B to Advance Portable AI Radar for Counter-Drone Use

October 17, 2025 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

New funding underlines rising demand for compact, AI-enhanced counter-UAS systems

MatrixSpace has closed a $20 million Series B funding round, pushing its total capital raised to $58 million to date. The Burlington, Massachusetts company specializes in portable radar systems that use artificial intelligence to help detect and respond to unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in real time.

Key Investors and Growth Strategy

The round was co-led by The Raptor Group and OTB Ventures. The latter is a European investor with strong ties to both defense and commercial sectors, especially in NATO-aligned industries. A notable new investor is L3Harris, a major player in defense and aerospace.

Gregory Waters, co-founder and CEO of MatrixSpace, said:

“We’re proud to welcome new investors OTB Ventures and industry powerhouse L3 Harris to MatrixSpace, along with the robust engagement of our existing investors. This new capital and industry partnerships position us extremely well for our next chapter of growth and cements our leadership in portable CUAS, or counter drone systems.”

Waters’ comments suggest the company plans to expand both its research and field deployment capabilities in the near future.

Marcin Hejka, co-founder and General Partner of OTB Ventures, added:

“By combining advanced radar and AI at the edge, MatrixSpace sets a new standard for edge sensing, redefining situational awareness for both civil and defense applications. We’re proud to back the team shaping how autonomous systems will perceive the world.”

That statement highlights investor confidence in MatrixSpace’s edge-based AI approach, especially for systems requiring real-time detection and classification without heavy reliance on cloud connectivity.

Technology and Market Positioning

MatrixSpace’s offering centers on compact, low-power radar systems that can be moved rapidly in the field. The systems support persistent detection, classification, and tracking in dynamic outdoor conditions. They aim to operate effectively in low light and low visibility environments.

The company’s software stack combines AI at the edge with cloud capabilities. This enables real-time classification, historical logging, and predictive functions. In practice, the package allows an organization to “create safe airspace rapidly and robustly,” according to the press release.

MatrixSpace positions itself as a leader in portable counter-UAS (CUAS) systems. It emphasizes flexibility to deploy in civil or defense settings, and adaptability across changing mission profiles.

Implications for the Drone Industry

This funding round comes at a time of fast growth in counter-UAS demand. Governments, critical infrastructure operators, and commercial stakeholders increasingly need reliable tools to detect and address drone threats. The focus is shifting toward solutions that can operate at the edge, with minimal latency and robust classification.

By bringing in strategic defense investors like L3Harris, MatrixSpace not only secures capital but also gains access to domain expertise, integration pathways, and potential customers in defense markets.

As the drone and UAS ecosystem matures, systems that can sense, classify, and respond autonomously (or semi-autonomously) will gain more traction. The ability to push intelligence to the sensor, rather than relying wholly on remote cloud processing, may become a key differentiator in high-stakes environments.

Looking Ahead

With the new capital, MatrixSpace will likely scale its product development, field tests, and deployment efforts. The inclusion of defense and dual-use investors signals a push toward more rigorous performance demands and integration into existing systems.

If successful, MatrixSpace could play a pivotal role in shaping how counter-drone systems evolve—particularly in scenarios where portability, speed, and edge intelligence matter most.

About MatrixSpace

MatrixSpace develops AI-enabled, portable CUAS systems that work in diverse environments. Its compact radar units deliver detection and classification for airspace, perimeter, and object monitoring. The systems are designed for dynamic outdoor settings with minimal infrastructure. For more information, visit www.matrixspace.com.
