Walmart and Wing Announce Major Drone Delivery Expansion

June 6, 2025 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

New partnership aims to bring drone delivery to millions of U.S. households in major metro areas

Walmart and drone delivery company Wing have announced what they describe as the world’s largest drone delivery expansion. Over the next year, the service will become available at 100 additional Walmart Supercenters across key U.S. metro areas.

By this time next year, customers in Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa will be able to receive their Walmart orders by drone. The companies will also add more delivery hubs in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where they already serve customers from 18 Supercenters.

A New Era of Convenience

Walmart already holds the largest drone delivery footprint of any U.S. retailer. With this new rollout, the company is strengthening its leadership in the space.

“As we look ahead, drone delivery will remain a key part of our commitment to redefining retail,” said Greg Cathey, SVP of Walmart U.S. Transformation and Innovation. “We’re pushing the boundaries of convenience to better serve our customers, making shopping faster and easier than ever before.”

Cathey said this new expansion marks a major step in Walmart’s effort to scale new technologies. “As the first retailer to scale drone delivery, Walmart is once again demonstrating its commitment to leveraging technology to enhance our delivery offerings with a focus on speed.”

Proven Success in Texas

Wing and Walmart launched their first joint drone delivery site in fall 2023. Since then, the service has grown in the Dallas-Fort Worth region, now covering a population of nearly 2 million people.

“People all around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex have made drone delivery part of their normal shopping habits over the past year,” said Wing CEO Adam Woodworth.

Woodworth highlighted the role of customer enthusiasm in driving expansion. “The popularity of drone delivery in DFW is a testament not just to its convenience, but to the way this technology quickly becomes a part of everyday life,” he said. “Walmart has been a strong partner that shares our commitment to innovation and is equally eager to bring this new type of service to many more households.”

Wing and Walmart are completing thousands of deliveries each week. The average delivery time is under 19 minutes.

How the Service Works

As Wing and Walmart expand into new markets, customers will be able to sign up for notifications at wing.com/walmart. Once drone delivery is live in their area, they can order items including fresh food, household goods, and everyday snacks.

The system is designed for simplicity. Shoppers confirm a drop-off location on their property during checkout. The order is packed into a secure box and flown by a Wing drone traveling at speeds up to 65 mph. The drone gently lowers the package to the ground, often within minutes.

Customers in Texas have already embraced the service. Many say it helps them with daily challenges—whether getting a last-minute dinner ingredient or finishing a home project.

This major expansion could mark a turning point in how Americans receive goods. With Walmart and Wing leading the charge, drone delivery is no longer a future vision—it’s quickly becoming part of everyday life.
