Alpha Unmanned Systems and Airbus Helicopters España Partner to Advance Crewed-Uncrewed Teaming

June 2, 2025 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

New agreement focuses on integrating unmanned helicopters into next-generation defense and security operations

Alpha Unmanned Systems and Airbus Helicopters España have signed a formal collaboration agreement to develop joint operations between manned and unmanned helicopters. The partnership builds on successful military exercises and marks a new step in integrating tactical UAVs into defense missions.

The agreement focuses on creating operational concepts that allow manned helicopters and unmanned rotary aircraft to work together. These operations aim to enhance surveillance, reconnaissance, and mission coordination across complex environments.

Joint Development for Tactical Interoperability

Alpha Unmanned Systems is known for its advanced unmanned helicopter designs. Airbus Helicopters España plays a major role in providing air solutions to the Spanish Armed Forces and national security agencies.

“We have signed a formal agreement to advance collaborative capabilities between manned and unmanned aircraft (MUM-T), a key step toward integrating tactical UAVs into next-generation helicopter operations,” said Eric Freeman, CEO of Alpha Unmanned Systems.

Luis Martín Díaz, Head of Customers and Programs at Airbus Helicopters España, added, “We are convinced that the synergy between helicopters and drones is essential for improving security and expanding functionalities.”

The collaboration will involve developing technologies that allow unmanned helicopters to operate alongside Airbus’s manned aircraft, improving overall mission effectiveness.

The Alpha A900: A Tactical Advantage

At the center of this effort is the Alpha A900, an unmanned helicopter known for its versatility and rugged design. With a maximum takeoff weight under 25 kilograms, the A900 is built to meet STANAG 4738 standards, aligning with the needs of military and security forces.

The A900 can operate in both maritime and land-based missions. Its design supports advanced integration with other systems and platforms, enabling real-time coordination during operations.

The system’s performance was recently demonstrated at the Spanish Army’s 2E+I Forum in Toledo. In these exercises, Alpha’s A900 UAVs operated in sync with Airbus H135 helicopters from the Spanish Army Air Forces (FAMET) and were managed directly from the cockpit of the manned aircraft. This scenario showcased how drones and crewed helicopters can operate together to improve safety, expand mission range, and deliver better intelligence.

Supporting National and International Defense

Alpha Unmanned Systems is headquartered in Madrid and serves clients in over 12 countries. These include the U.S. Department of Defense, the Spanish Armed Forces, the Hellenic Navy, and the Indonesian Coast Guard. The company’s rotary UAVs, including the A900 and Alpha 800, are used in missions ranging from border security to maritime patrol.

This latest partnership reinforces Spain’s growing role in defense technology and the future of mixed aircraft operations. By combining Airbus’s experience with Alpha’s UAV systems, the agreement positions both companies to shape the next era of aerial collaboration.
