Skyfish Launches Osprey: A New American-Made Drone Designed to Compete with DJI

May 20, 2025 by Miriam McNabb 3 Comments

Unveiled at XPONENTIAL 2025, Osprey supports high-end sensors for inspection and ISR operations

At the AUVSI XPONENTIAL 2025 conference, American drone manufacturer Skyfish introduced its latest enterprise drone, Osprey—a lightweight, survey-grade UAS designed as a U.S.-made alternative to leading foreign systems like DJI. The launch took place at Booth #3812 on May 20, 2025.

Osprey aims to serve a wide range of commercial and government customers with its precision engineering and advanced imaging capabilities.

American-made enterprise drone

Designed for Portability and Precision

Osprey stands out for its compact form factor and high-performance design. With an all-up weight of approximately 13 pounds, the drone and its new remote controller fit into a single backpack, making it easy to carry and deploy. The aircraft supports flight times of more than 50 minutes and has a radio range between 3 to 5 miles.

Built for detailed infrastructure inspection and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) tasks, the drone is equipped to handle industry-leading third-party sensors. These include the 61-megapixel Sony LR1 camera and the NextVision Raptor EO/IR system. It also features RTK capability for centimeter-level location accuracy and automated in-flight geotagging of synchronized frame data.

“For law enforcement and defense, Osprey supports the NextVision Raptor EO/IR sensor with incredible X80 EO zoom and significant IR range,” the company stated.

American-Made and NDAA Compliant

Skyfish developed Osprey to offer a U.S.-made solution for organizations seeking an alternative to DJI systems. The drone is made in Montana, NDAA compliant, and currently undergoing Green UAS certification. It has already achieved U.S. Army DEVCOM Airworthiness Level 3 certification.

“To give customers exceptional performance, Osprey was designed to be lightweight, fly up to an hour, record an exact location, and support best-in-class industry sensors for either infrastructure inspection, or ISR,” said Dr. Orest Pilskalns, CEO of Skyfish. “The Osprey was also originally designed as an American-made replacement for the DJI M30 or DJI M300 series drone, but Osprey turned out to be an even better drone than the DJI equivalent. To all those that say that there isn’t an American-made drone to compete against DJI – well there is now – it’s the American made, NDAA compliant, Skyfish Osprey drone.”

Use Cases: From Cell Towers to Critical Infrastructure

Skyfish says the Osprey is mission-built for professionals who require detailed and measurable data. The system creates high-fidelity 3D models and digital twins with measurement accuracy down to 1/32 of an inch. These models support engineering tasks across sectors like telecommunications, transportation, energy, and land management.

Customer use cases already include the inspection and analysis of:

  • Cellular towers

  • Bridges and roadways

  • Wind turbines

  • Airports and power lines

The drone’s precision and compatibility with professional-grade imaging tools make it especially useful for engineers and public safety professionals alike.
