Pierce Aerospace has announced a new collaboration with MITRE aimed at advancing the development of Remote ID and related technologies for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Under a new memorandum of understanding, Pierce Aerospace will deploy its Remote ID sensors at the MITRE National Range. The organizations will work together to support research in airspace detection, drone autonomy, and national security.

Aaron Pierce, CEO of Pierce Aerospace, described the agreement as a natural step forward: “MITRE has always been at the forefront of supporting the public safety sector and the United States through their research and development in support of the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Transportation,” he said. “We previously engaged with MITRE in testing and evaluation of our Remote ID sensors and capabilities. It made logical sense to further the relationship so we can continue to advance research and development with MITRE in support of the public safety sector and the U.S. government, particularly as we continue to advance the state of the art of UAS remote identification.”

Supporting Public Safety and National Security

The MITRE National Range serves as a platform where government, academia, and industry can experiment and prototype solutions for real-world challenges related to drones and emerging technologies. The facility is designed to support the safe integration of new technologies into the National Airspace System (NAS) while reinforcing homeland security priorities.

“MITRE is proud to partner with Pierce Aerospace to advance critical initiatives in homeland and national security. Our mission is to enhance capabilities in ways that are both effective and safe,” said Yosry Barsoum, vice president and director of the Center for Securing the Homeland at MITRE. “By working across industry, federal agencies, and academia, MITRE is uniquely positioned to understand how emerging technologies align with mission objectives. This collaboration between the MITRE National Range and Pierce Aerospace is a vital step in transforming airspace management, ensuring public safety for drone operators and hobbyists, and strengthening our ability to respond to evolving threats.”

Building a Foundation for Drone Integration

Remote ID technology has become a key component in advancing drone safety and security in shared airspace. Pierce Aerospace has continued to refine its system, which allows real-time identification of drones in flight. These capabilities help regulators and operators manage airspace more safely and efficiently.

“In the last year, we’ve advanced our Remote ID capabilities and demonstrated that broadcast Remote ID can serve as a fundamental infrastructure that supports an economical path toward UAS integration into the National Airspace System,” added Pierce. “With MITRE we intend to continue to push the envelope of research and deliver solutions that aid in the safe and secure integration of drones into the NAS.”

About the Partners

Pierce Aerospace is a dual-use Internet of Things and aerospace company headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The company focuses on Remote ID services for drones and plays an active role in shaping UAS policy and safety standards. Pierce Aerospace’s technology has received recognition from both the U.S. Air Force and the State of Indiana.

MITRE is a not-for-profit research and development organization serving federal agencies through applied science, systems engineering, and mission-critical innovation. With expertise across sectors, MITRE supports defense, homeland security, healthcare, and aviation safety initiatives.
