The Drone Show Korea 2025 (DSK 2025) commenced today at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO), hosted by the Unmanned Vehicle Association of Korea. This year’s event places a significant emphasis on the global opportunities within the drone industry, showcasing how unmanned technologies are crossing borders and providing unique value worldwide. The opening keynote by Mr. Clinton Heimann, Deputy Director General for Spatial Planning and Land Use Management at the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development of South Africa, set the tone by exploring the vast opportunities in South Africa.

Mr. Heimann discussed the integral role of drones in enhancing agricultural productivity and land management in South Africa. The national drone program, now three years in operation, has successfully employed drones to manage and reform large agricultural landscapes and urban areas. “The real value of drones comes in their ability to gather data for us to process… this translates into actionable decisions faster than ever before, shifting trends from reactive to proactive, data-driven management,” Heimann noted.

With 48 trained drone pilots, South Africa’s drone initiatives help with precision agriculture, border security, land valuations, and food security projects. The country’s use of advanced technology for imagery processing and 3D mapping has not only supported efficient land use but also propelled job creation and reduced conflicts through integrated data analysis processes.
Opportunities for Global Expansion
Highlighting the session, Mr. Heimann outlined the attractive investment opportunities in the South African drone market. With a sophisticated regulatory framework and strategic positioning, South Africa offers a gateway to the African continent’s burgeoning UAS market, projected to grow to US $10 billion. This positions the nation as a starting point for global drone companies aiming to tap into the African market and beyond.
