On October 22, 2024, the Amaravati Drone Summit witnessed an unprecedented aerial spectacle as 5,500 drones took to the sky, setting five world records in a single show. The event, hosted in Vijayawada, marked a significant moment for India’s drone industry, showcasing its innovation and engineering capabilities on a global stage.
A Record-Breaking Performance
The 12-minute display featured seven formations, illustrating India’s technological advancements and cultural heritage. Notable formations included a tribute to the 1911 India Post Commemorative Stamp, an illuminated Amaravati Buddha Stupa, and a striking representation of the Indian national flag. Additionally, the drones depicted real-world applications such as surveillance, medical supply deliveries, and agricultural uses.
The five records set during the show were:
- Largest Aerial Display of a Vehicle Formed by Multirotors/Drones – Demonstrating engineering precision at an unprecedented scale.
- Largest Aerial Landmark Display Formed by Multirotors/Drones – A breathtaking recreation of the Amaravati Buddha Stupa.
- Largest Aerial Display of a Planet Formed by Multirotors/Drones – A 3D globe highlighting Andhra Pradesh as a growing aviation hub.
- Largest Aerial Logo Display Formed by Multirotors/Drones – Showcasing the Indian Council of Aviation Organisation (ICAO) emblem.
- Largest Aerial Image of a Flag Formed by Multirotors/Drones – A tribute to India’s unity and progress.
India’s Innovation in Drone Technology
The achievement was particularly notable because all 5,500 drones used in the performance were designed and manufactured in India. This underscores the country’s progress in developing indigenous drone technology. “This isn’t just a technological milestone — it’s a symbol of the incredible potential within our country, our people, and our ideas,” the press release stated.
A dedicated team of 150 engineers, designers, and technicians worked tirelessly to bring the show to life. Their collective effort resulted in a visually stunning and technically flawless event, garnering international recognition.
BotLab Dynamics
The drone light show was orchestrated by BotLab Dynamics, an IIT Delhi-based company specializing in aerial displays. BotLab has previously executed large-scale drone performances, including India’s first 1,000-drone show at Rashtrapati Bhawan and a pre-wedding event in Jamnagar featuring 5,500 drones.
