Asylon Robotics Deploys Gas-Sniffing Security Robots at the Indy 500

October 8, 2024 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

Robots Enhance Security with Real-Time Chemical Detection at Major Event

Asylon Robotics successfully deployed gas-sniffing security robots at the Indianapolis 500 this year, helping ensure the safety of over 300,000 attendees. The deployment was made possible through collaboration between Asylon Robotics, 908 Devices, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The advanced robotic systems provided real-time situational awareness and chemical detection capabilities in challenging environments, such as the tunnels beneath the speedway.

Advanced Robotic Systems for Enhanced Security

Asylon’s DroneDog-2 security robots, built on the Spot® platform by Boston Dynamics, played a key role in maintaining security during the event. These robots patrolled areas beneath the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where traditional GPS and communication signals are limited. Equipped with advanced tools such as the Asylon PupPack for remote operation and the 908 Devices InterceptIR for chemical gas identification, the robots were able to perform their duties efficiently even in such challenging conditions.

The deployment relied on a secure mesh communications network, supplemented by Starlink, to provide live video feeds and real-time chemical gas data. This allowed the on-site emergency operations center to receive updates and coordinate responses from any location, without relying solely on nearby cell networks.

“Asylon is proud to contribute to the safety and security of the Indianapolis 500 with our advanced robotic systems. The successful deployment of these robots and associated technologies, integrated with our DroneIQ software, demonstrates the breadth of innovative ways that robotics can be used to enhance safety and security,” said Adam Mohamed, Co-Founder and CTO of Asylon Robotics.

Real-Time Chemical Detection

The integration of 908 Devices’ InterceptIR technology played a vital role in the success of the operation. This payload allowed the robots to detect hazardous gases and chemicals in real-time, providing critical information to safety teams.

“We’re thrilled to see the 908 Devices InterceptIR payload effectively used at such a high-profile event. Our technology’s ability to detect and identify hazardous gases and chemicals in real-time, combined with a robotic platform like Asylon’s, helps ensure the safety for all involved,” said John Johnson, Senior Director, Forensics Business Development at 908 Devices.

Maintaining Operational Readiness

The DroneDog-2 units were equipped with Asylon’s “DogHouse,” a weatherized charging system designed for outdoor use, which allowed the robots to recharge and remain operational throughout the entire event. This ensured they could continue patrolling the grounds without interruptions, providing continuous support to the security team.

Asylon Robotics has conducted over 140,000 robotic and drone security missions to date, showcasing its expertise in the field of robotic security. The company continues to innovate in the development of AI-powered security solutions, helping organizations tackle complex safety challenges.
