Terra Drone Gets Permission for Commercial BVLOS Flight in Indonesia

July 21, 2020 by Miriam McNabb 8 Comments

Commercial BVLOS Flight in IndonesiaTerra Drone Indonesia has received Indonesia’s first commercial BVLOS flight permit.

The Directorate of Airworthiness & Aircraft Operations (DAAO), Director General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia issued Terra Drone Indonesia with a permit to fly commercial drone flights beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS.) “By obtaining this permit, Terra Drone Indonesia will be able to fully utilize the maximum potential use of drones, especially for missions such as surveys, surveillance, and patrols,” says a Terra Drone Indonesia press release.

Indonesia already has drone regulations: Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASR) Part 107 governs small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) with a maximum weight of 25 kilograms and has been in effect for 5 years. CASR Part 107 prohibits BVLOS flight.   Commercial BVLOS flight is critical for the expansion of drone applications, however.   In addition to long distance applications like power line inspections or large infrastructure mapping, BVLOS flight may imply simply flying around the corner of a building or behind a geographical feature like a mountain.

Terra Drone Indonesia is a trusted drone manufacturer and service provider.  In 2019, the company received a contract with energy giant Chevron to inspect onshore flare stacks at one of Indonesia’s largest oil fields.  As the first to receive a permit for commercial BVLOS flight, Terra Drone Indonesia may lead the way for the Indonesian drone industry.  “A thorough and tested operating procedure is the key to obtaining this permit from the civil aviation authority in Indonesia. Terra Drone Indonesia continues to be committed to introduce the benefits of drone technology through safe operation, as well as supporting the government in ensuring the safety of civil aviation, “explained Michael Wishnu Wardana, CEO of Terra Drone Indonesia.

“Terra Drone Indonesia will continue to provide good examples as a benchmark, and will assist the government in socializing the applicable rules through promotional activities, involvement in forums and associations, and education to customers.”
